Hi guys
Got an ATI 9800 Pro 128mb here, being cooled by a VM-101
But i bought that because i thought i'd be able to use the PCI slot next to the AGP slot, but you actually can't anyway, so if i had known that, i would have preferred to use an arctic silencer and get that hot air from my case...
Especially now the weather's getting hotter here... i really don't want to take any chances though, and so i've hot a huge (room) fan pointing at my computer!
I think the Silencer 1 Rev.4 is the latest and greatest one to get for the 9800 pro 128... Is that gonna kill my card? Or is only the rev 3 on an 9800 pro 128 troublesome?
I've read the horror stories about the cards being fried with arctic coolers, but the PSU is my only exhaust fan and i can't fit another.
Thanks guys
Edd

Huh
Do you really think Kustom would sell them - or indeed have sold so many 'em... if they were at all unsafe, or in the habit of frying cards
Dozens of us on here have been using various Arctic Coolers on our cards for donkeys without a problem. Why would yours be any different?
And you really haven't been doing your homework properly, have you? The ATI Silencer 3 isn't suitable for 128MB 9800 Pro's like yours... and the ATI Silencer 4 is for X800 Pro's... not 9800 Pro's [like yours]
Not suitable for 9800 Pro 128mb
You need/get yourself an ATI Silencer 1 (http://www.kustompcs.co.uk/acatalog/info_2820.html) ... get it on there, and forget all that scaremongering nonsense you've been reading ;)

because i've read that loads of people have fried their cards that way? i read about it on the silentpcreview forums quite a bit.
i have done my homework - hence me saying: "I think the Silencer 1 Rev.4 is the latest and greatest one to get for the 9800 pro 128...
That's the silencer 1 but the fourth revision. you can see it here: ok, i deleted it.
My comments on the silencer 3 breaking cards, wasn't about putting one on MY card, but i heard there were problems with this cooler breaking the 9800XT/ pro 256mb.
Thanks for being ultra patronising though. Maybe just a 'no, they seem to work really well as far as i know' would work next time eh?

Oh dear! You're not going to impress Fireblade by linking to another store in a forum run by KustomPCs (a computer store), it just shows you didn't read the FAQ. And no I've never heard of anyone frying a graphics card with an arctic silencer. I guess they never applied the thermal grease properly.
"Arctic Coolers - Are they safe?"
Have you seen how many vga card manufacturers fit them as standard ex-factory?
If there were problems do you think that they would still be doing so?
I would guess that any problems have been due to incorrect fitting or using the wrong version for the job.
PS. for the record both my X800 Pro & 6800GT have Arctic Coolers fitted as did my 2x9800 Pros & a 9500 Pro.

I wasn't trying to impress him, thanks. I did get rid of the link, but it's a stupid rule. That link was given as it explicitly states it's a Rev. 4 Silencer 1, the Kustoms one doesn't say which revision it is.
Thanks buff.
You guys need to calm down, i was only asking a damn question, you don't have to go all cliquey on me
Thanks for all your help, what a wonderful place this is.
Totally agree, calm down chaps, jeez, the poor guy only asked is they were safe, fair enough question to me.
I have a 9800 and it appears that I can use the pci slot next to my card fine, but I leave it free for air circulation. If it's cooling you after, personally i would go for the Zalamn vga cooler (on kustoms site somewhere).

cheers mate
i think i'll order one(yes, from kustom ), need as much air being sucked out the case as possible, as the psu as the only exhaust is pretty pants

Actually, there have only been 2 revisions of the ATI Silencer 1 (http://www.arctic-cooling.com/vga2.php?idx=36) - the others were revisions of the Arctic Cooling VGA Silencer (noticeably different);)

hi, i'm holding it in my hands now. but i'm scared to install it as i'm pretty sure this is gonna take up TWO pci slots, not just one.
argh.
