View Full Version : XP PAIN IN THE A@*E
I cannot install any adobe products on XP Pro
the problem seems to be the setup exe. which I run but it just hangs and nothing happens. I am using all the latest versions of acrobat 5.05 and photoshop 6. Does anyone have a similar problem or any pointers, as this is infuriating.
Cheers

Not any known issues with XP and Adobe stuff - only time I've seen a machine hang everytime you run a setup.exe was because they were infected with CIH virus... are you running up to date anti-viri software?
Yes I am running PCcilin 2000 updated today and no viruses.
Do you think that I could reinstall windows on top of my existing version to solve this problem?
Please Help
Cheers
if u decide to reinstall windows i would install it clean and not just over your current install, because that would probably just add to your problems.
Could it be that the photoshop cd is damaged? Try to copy the photoshop install to HD and see if it installs from there ;)
Cheers Guys, however in reply to Scotties comments it is also the same situation for the adobe Acrobat reader 5.05 which I downloaded from the adobe site. It is a cab file self extracting and it extracts to a local temp file but then nothing happens and also I cannot locate the file which is supposed to be in documents/local/temp.
Any clues? Thanx again to everyone that has replied.
Jose

do you have admin rights?
just installed XP pro...........oooh isnt it pretty, the colours , the drama the romance!............the absolute lack of driver support for my bt 'frogface' adsl modem,
and another thing, after finally getting the driver for it (absolute nightmare to get working) my adsl is acting like a 56k , jesus XP cutting edge , cutting wrists more like.....oh well off to eXPeriment.............sorry couldnt help that......*seriously thinks if starting a game is wise*

Could be a few things BUT I never had a speed issue with XP just my USB resetting
I put it down to either low power PSU or lots of USB stuff.
I had a nightmare with mine when I ran it alongside a hub, but there is also a problem with some MB's.
Though since running it on my shuttle Ive not had a single problem.
I was going to try a USB 2 card to see if that helped but dont need to now.

Stumpie,
Had the same problem on my XP install. Turned out that admin rights were needed to get anywhere at all within the setup.
Nice and helpful of Adobe NOT to check if the user has admin rights and inform them of this
Cheers again guys I will double check but as I am the only user account setup, I assume I have admin rights. How do you assign admin rights anyway?
Rav did this solve the problem?
ok modems seamed to have sorted itself out, but some of my games dont work, does xp run off directx8.1 cause i had 8 before and it was fine
Switching to a user with Admin rights and executing setup worked fine.
To change user type (assuming you've got the 'hand-holding' control panel window style on)
Control Panel -> Users
Pick the account you want to change
Click "Change the account type"
Make sure "Computer Administrator" is selected, and click "Change Account Type"
Have fun!

Make sure that you are not using the default XP installed drivers for your Vid card and you have the latest Detonaters installed.
All sorted now did a reg clean and then EVERYTHING is hunky dory. Thanks For all your help, I appreciate it.
Stumpy  :D ;)
im having trouble with nvidias XP drivers, even though on the nvidia site there xp ready , when i download my comp says there not certified............erm
Freddie that there not certified just means that msoft have not tested them. Do they work ok?

I have had exactly the same problem, I cannot install any adope or macromedia products, always the same thing it can't open various zipped files namely data1.com / data2.cab. I was under the impression that this was a hardware issue with the ram rather than an XP one, so I bought some new ram yesterday, but the same thing happened! I am just about to play about putting it in different slots to see if that makes a difference! failing that, I am gonna my blow torch on it, and burn the fecker - that'll teach him :)
If you work it out, please, please let me know!
Oh and I also downloaded the trail versions to see if it was the files that were corrupted but the same thing happens!
Apart from that I really like XP, shockingly similar to OSX :) but its nice to use, and I get to have a homer simpson icon next to my name and everything! But I am tempted to go back to 2k or NT if I can't sort this out, cause I need those programs! :(

WEIRD, mine was fantastic, it had detected all my hardware during instalation, and when I booted it for the first time everything was running apart from the graphics card, but once I ran the drviers - all hunky dorey!
HOWEVER it wouldn't recognise my netgear network card for my blueyonder cable modem. But I found out that athlon XP CPU's dont work with netgear stuff. So I installed my cable modem with a usb lead, and got the drivers from the web! Now it works fine, and its actually way better than that annoying network card anway! Mine is very, very quick now, just realised that my internet connection was so fast my old pc couldnt keep up! :)

Now I have resolved the harware and over heating issues, it runs like a dream, fastes, and most stable system I have ever had. All Applications are installed and running, and XP is really stable, honest! Better than 2k used to be on my old system! Really happy with it!
