Hi there!
I have a bit of a problem:
I bought a nice PC6070B case from kustompcs, but did not realize how problematic cooling for it would be.
My components are:
- P4 (775) 3.4GHz Extreme Edition with a Coolermaster Hyper48 heatsink
- ASUS P5AD2 Premium motherboard
- Asus X800XT PE graphics card with Arctic Cooling ATI Silencer 5
- 2 serial ATA drives, 2 IDE drives, 1 DVD-Rom
- 3x 80mm standard LianLi case fans
When idle, CPU temp is around 45C and motherboard temp is about 34C.
However, when I play a graphics- or CPU-intensive game like Doom3 or HalfLife2, CPU temp goes up to 67C and motherboard temp is around 43C - not good!
Can anybody give me some pointers on how to cool it properly?
Thanx guys.
sounds like the coolermaster heatsink isnt very efficient. make sure you are only using the thinnest smear of thermal paste. make sure the cooler is fitted evenly to the chip.
if all that fails, stick the standard hsf on and see what the temps are on that. if they are similar, throw away the coolermaster and get something better.

simple answer is to water cool it mate or buy the best heat sinks you can for p4's and add lots of case fans

I have a 3.4ee on the socket 478 die in a Shuttle and heat is most certainly not an issue. However 775 boards are designed for Prescott and the temps you mention, while high for a Northwood based ee, are perfectly ok for a Prescott. Googling the hyper 48 threw up an SPCR review. Could it be you problems are decent cooling without too much noise? High temps can be the lot of the silence brigade, but your heatsink seems to be of sound design. A different fan might be enough for the cpu cooling or a 120 plus adaptor. Case temps suggests you could go for better ventilation.

I am trying to keep noise to a minimum, but the real problem is case ventilation. The Lian-Li PC6070 has two 80mm fans blowing air in from the bottom front of the case - thats it. In my setup the gfCard cooler vents the air through a PCI slot out the back. Doesnt seem to leave too much cool air for the top front of the case and the cpu. I have attached a pic of the case layout.
Do you think I should cut a blowhole somewhere in the case side (cos I am not a fan of water cooling) or are there other options I just haven't thought of?
Thanx guys.
yes, a blowhole in a lian makes a big difference to the case temps because of the venting of the hot air.
if you do cut a blowhole, but it in just in front of the psu it will work well

What you need is a exhaust blowhole at the top of your case, this will get rid of excess heat the best and will keep your air flow balanced

Thanx for the tips guys. I'll be off modding my case then! ;)
