Hi guys

Not sure if this is the right forum, but here is the trouble maker:

http://images.gruntville.com/images/hardware/aerocool_vm101/VM101_Installed_3.jpg

Basically what i want to do, is make the card so i can use the PCI slot next to my radeon 9800 pro. The cards screws only just cover the pci slot. I wanna somehow shave down the cooler and screws so that i can fit a pci card in... where can i take the metal to be sanded down?

Or somewhere i can get rid of that top piece, and replace it with a thin sheet of pure copper?

What kinda places would do this for me? Is it just asking for overheating trouble?

Thanks, hope i've made it clear. The bit i want to shave down is actually the top of 2 pieces, and sandwiches the heatpipes to the card. I could try just using the 'lightning shield' and do away with teh top part of the sink, but i'm pretty sure the lightning thing is too thin and weak. Maybe this clarifies the situation:

Any ideas?

Thanks!

could you not counter sink the screws into the block? eg, get a drill and slant the screw holes so that the screws are flush with the block thus gettin rid of the protrusion
or am i on the wrong tracks

You could always try getting other screws for it, ones with low profile heads on them.

I personally wouldnt reccomend using the 1st pci slot if your using a half decent graphics card. In most cases, the 1st pci slot shares the same IRQ as the agp slot which can cause problems if you try to use both. Also using a card in that slot is gonna reduce the amount of airflow over the card, with that and the combined heat of the pci card your gonna notica an increase in temperature of the card.

hey

my computer is a mac, and macs don't use IRQ's etc, so i don't think that's a worry? also, about airflow, the heatsink is designed to dissipate heat on the otherside, and the chip-side of the card isn't really meant to be the main 'dissipater'. ii have a 120mm fan blowing over the fins, which gets cool air direct from outside the case, so i think cooling is ok.

i could try to cut the screws down/get new flat ones, or to counter sink them - that would be cool, but i'd like the actual black heatsink part to be a little further away - just a few mm from the pci card i use, so that the card doesn't melt! the actual heatsink doesn't even get that hot to be honest, but over time etc...

i'll keeping thinking about what you said, thanks guys, more suggestions welcome too!

Was there really any need to create another thread to ask this? Couldn't you have done it within the one you already had.....

um

i'm sorry if my new thread offended you

if any mods want to merge the two, go for it.

the other thread didn't seem to be getting responces, and this one clearly did
