Hello.

Ever since i installed my NV5 on my 6800, i conqured my phobia of thermal paste, and cleaning cores.

I brought that heatsink on sunday. I had a kind of dream that once i get all the things needed, i could mildly overclock and be happy, the only thing stopping me after getting my OCZ powerstream 520W and the NV5, was a good cooler with the AMD brackets.

Anyway, it came by interlink at 9:30am. I got the akasa TIM remover ready, got the anti-static band, turned off power, and opened her up. Firstly, I took out the 4pin motherboard thingy, since it would of been in the way. I pulled back the black lever thingy on the heatsink to remove it. I was kinda miffed and didnt know what to do next. I wiggled the heatsink a little and managed to get one side of the clip off. It kinda panged of. while i was trying to get the otherside off...i noticed the CPU was not where it should of been. I was prepared!!! It was really stuck on, so i used my aunties hairdryer and managed to slide it off the heatsink. I cleaned as much as i could with a plastic card, and used lint-free cloth with the akasa TIM remover.

I put the processor back in its place, and got hold of the heatsink and carfully lined up the top bracket. Once that was down, i pulled the back the lever on that side to tighten it. The heatsink has two of these, so...being stoopid, i tried pulling the other down with the otherside locked. The heatsink was pangin back up, so i would push it down and wiggle it more to get the air pockets out. After about 10 minutes of doing this, i tried unlocking the other side, and...it was a hell of alot easier. So, i was eager to know if i done a good job, and thus turned on the PC. I was really anxieious. But, the monitor wouldnt turn on from stand-by...and, no BIOs beep...nothing. All fans working but nothing else. I felt really, really, really ill. I tried plugging the fan directly into the motherboard instead of the fan controller. Again, no dice. I was almost in tears.

Looking back at installing the NV 5, being as anxious then...i hastely turned on the PC to see if it was working, only to get a continuous long, loud beep. Even then i thought i really ****ed things up. But, at least i know gaphics cards only do that when theres no power going to it

Seeing the 4pin connector...i plugged it in, and it booooted. :D I was really relieved. Im running Prime 95 now, and it has not gone over 38 degrees. And it hardly even touched 38 degrees anyway. I will overclock soon to 2.2ghz, and see the difference. I was considering a victory whiskey, but its way to earily.

Anyway, a long post! i dont mind if no-one reads all that. It was a big accomplishment for me, and im really, really happy that its taking off 8 degrees from stock. It sounds like a hover, but i wouldnt have it any other way

Well done, i hate it when you forget to plug things in, even after years of practice everytime i install something i spend a minute checking every wire just in case. Its a really sick feeling when you add something and then you cant get it to boot :( Glad you sorted it though.

For me attaching heatsinks is still the worst bit of building a PC, everytime i do it i get a cold sweat.

I forgot the 4-pin connector when I built my first rig, It's a scary thing to do, especially when it's your first build.
