Our inside source says that the console is a sleek silver device worthy of countertop display, and features an inhaled design that turns the harsh angles of the original Xbox into sweeps and curves. The device will also be able to stand upright or on it’s side, much like the Playstation 2. The side of the 360° is dominated by an oversized, back-lit power button called the ring of light, and the rest of the case can be customized with colorful designer face plates that pop on and off. The 360°s dashboard will also be customizable, making each console a thing totally unique to its owner.
Some of the inner workings of the 360° have also been confirmed. The device will feature high definition audio and video and wireless controllers, and will come in two flavors—one with a hard drive and one without. The biggest shock is that while Microsoft wants to make their 360° backwards compatible, they haven’t yet been able to pull it off.
“They’re working on it,” said our source.
OOOH!
cant wait :)
what sort of out side source is this.lol
a new x box meh
Wow, that does sound pretty great. I'll definately be going for the Hard-Disk variety, as that's what set the Xbox apart, for me, from the other consoles.
As for the rest of the description, it sounds pretty awesome. I'm also glad that they're working on backwards compatability, although I wonder how it came about that they're having trouble? :p
errrr I bet that is someones imagnation. Since when did microsoft allow people to change the way a peice of software they produced work? In this case the dashboard software! Why would they produce that with the xbox 2 around the corner?

I am same xbox getting some serious usage at the moment (mainly cause I just signed up to live and am addicted to halo2).
This makes sense though, they lost a lot of purchases in japan because of the size and uglyness of xbox1 so making it pretty will help sell it in japan.

sounds good.. i think xbox1 lost a lot of sales just beacuse it was so big and ugly!... if xbox2 is going to sell it needs to look good, espeically considering it will most likely be less powerfull than ps3. perhaps microsoft might learn something, looks count!.. hopefully they will consider this when designing the visual side of there next operating system too!. im fed up of having my computer look like a 3yr old has attacked it with a set of crayons

I thought they were not releasing any pictures of the xbox360/xbox2 till the mtv show on the 13th of may (8pm)
They released some at a recent press conference I believe.
There was also a thread on this already, so I would not be surprised if the mods close this one.

I don't think it's a fake, the details in the pictures are all accurate. Also, there is the new controller, eyetoy style camera and the headset visible.

Hmmm not convinced, maybe some design student trying his hand, compared to the slimline ps2 it's a monster.
the controller also looks a bit chunky.
but we will know soon.
xboxnext.com owned by MS
compared to the slimline ps2 it's a monster.
Sony cheated with that (imho anyway) - the PSU is external.

The slimline PS2 is beautiful and the part external PSU is pretty small anyway. Also those users who think the PS3 will be that small will be in for a shock, expect it to be similar in size to the XBOX 360, just hopefully a little slimmer.
From a cost point of view I still don't understand why both the new consoles don't use a flip lid design.
A flip lid? like the one on the new ps2s, I think is ... well rather cheap imo.
If I ever bought a games console, I would prefer it to had a bit of build quality to it, and I think that a flip lid would be something that could be very flimsy.
PJ Matthews

and I think that a flip lid would be something that could be very flimsy.
Well read up on your consoles, the majority are flip lid and they are more robust than tray loaders as there are fewer parts to go wrong!
Why? don't play a console ... like at all.

Thats carp. The webcam is exactly that, a webcam for video conferencing over xbox live, and stand-up console... well, you can stand the original xbox up if you wanted to.... just don't use the dvd drive while you do :P
As for sony stealing idea's from MS... the PS2's 'Hard Drive', to put the term loosely, as its used for a whole 1 game... if sony didnt take MS's idea on that!
Here's some leaked xbox 360 specs:
The leaked specs (if true) confirm lots of the rumors we saw over the last few months.
The specs say the Xbox360 will have support for 4 wireless controllers and the console will have 3 USB2.0 ports. The DVD drive will be a 'simple' DVD9-drive, with support for these formats: DVD-video, DVD-Rom, DVD-R/RW, CD-DA, CD-Rom, CD-R, CD-RW, WMA CD, MP3 cd, JPEG photo CD. The detachable 20GB HDD will be included by default from the information we received (atleast in the 'full' package). We also got some sources telling us the Xbox360 will come with Wi-Fi 802.11 A, B and G support.
The Xbox 360 face plates will be customizable to change the appearance.
All games will have full support for the 16:9 format , 720p and 1080i HDTV (Max resolution: 1920x1080) and anti-aliasing.
Xbox360's IBM CPU will have 3 symmetrical cores running at 3.2 GHz each with 1 MB L2 cache. Each core has 2 hardware threads and one VMX-128 vector unit. Enough to boost an impressive 9 billion dots per second.
The ATI GPU will run at 500MHz with 10 MB embedded DRAM (256 GB/s memory bandwidth) and contain 48 parallel floating-point shader pipelines.
System memory will probably be 512MB of GDDR3 RAM (at 700 Mhz) with 22.4 GB/s memory interface bus bandwidth and 21.6GB/s frontside bus bandwidth.
The Xbox360 will also have a mulitchannel surround output.

It won't be officially downloadable ( ;) ), hence not posting a link on this forum.
I'm sure it'll be on most P2P progs and BitTorrent very soon after :p
I would have though MS would stick an official link up for people that dont have sky, after all, the show will basically be one long sales show, with everyone saying how amazing it will be.

That looks remarkably like a Dead or Alive game, now I don't think I have a choice about whether to get the console or not. Currently trying to not buy DoA Ultimate and Live until I've done my exams.

Enjoy.
Good video, got to love that Microsoft PR bull**** though, lol, man them guys get on my tits, that MTV thing will probably do my head in, everyone just praising it, but i guess we get a peek at it so what the hell.
tbh i don't think i actually like the look of it, too white and Mac-ish, i'm sure apple had something to do with the console and controller design, it's how i imagine a Mac console would look, all a bit to white for me.

Quote from vid : "Make it yours"
Oh, excellent, they're going to let me mod chip it and run it as an HTPC this time!
Looks good, though, as a hardware platform. Of course, the final aspect that either makes it or breaks it is the games. I didn't see one of the members of that video saying this dialogue :-
"Dual SMT processors, water cooling, wireless... but... errm... err, well.... it still won't have Gran Turismo 4 on it..."
;)

To be honest its nothing a decent PC can't do right now. However a £300-400 XBOX 360 vs a £1500 odd PC, and now with HD connections allowing decent image quality aswell, the PCs days as a games machine could well be numbered. All we need now is keyboard and mouse support in alot of the games like GTA and Unreal on the XBOX 360 and we're sorted :p.
The xbox at the moment far surpasses the PS2. THe xbox 360 will make the PS2 look like an Atari in comparison! :D
The specs of the 360 beat most people's PC's in sheer processing power (not including the freaks that push P4's to 8Ghz etc.), and with a graphics chip the power of an x800, as PJ said, the PC's days as gaming machines may well be up.
I can't wait :D :D
The xbox 360 (xbox 2) has three 3.2 ghz CPU's making a total of 9.6 ghz. The graphics card is more powerful than any out on the market at this moment and the whole console basicly walks over any pc at this time.
jsnemesis
16-05-2005, 10:08
No, it doesn't, youve read that wrong, it has 3 cores on the one CPU, each with a form of HT enabled, not resulting 9.6 GHz, thats not the way it works ;)
JS

That's just not the way multiple processors work. You do get performance enhancements, but not to the extent that you just add up the clock speeds.
Though it will be interesting to see how the games perform, especially if any company actually codes a fully multi-threaded game.

No-chance! I don't own a console as I:
Don't like fighting games
Don't like driving games
Don't like FPS with a pad (ugh! Awful)
Unitl consoles can get a mouse/keyboard sorted out, get some decent strategy games then no chance. Also, the higher games prices, predicted going to £50 may put people off, as opposed to my £18 Guild wars I purchased last week. The fact that game companies have to pay the consoles license fee's doesn't really help. And i can't imagine much happenning on the mmorpg front for consoles either.
The fact that pc games can be patched, modded etc is also another reason why i don't think they will go away.

Since the new Xbox at least has USB support, and since it is practically a PC, I'm thinking you might be able to get away with a plug and play keyboard and mouse, if the game developers design for them.
On the note of the three cores, I believe you can see their effectiveness in some of the X360 trailers, specifically the ones for Full Auto (http://gametrailers.com/gamepage.php?id=1655), which demonstrates an immense amount of real-time physical calculations going on, without the fps seeming to skip a beat. And that's in addition to all the other crazy things going on and the impressive graphics.

If you watched the one of the videos from microsoft they say xbox 360 will be liquid cooled.
PJ Matthews
22-05-2005, 13:32
Liquid cooling still needs fans. Also think more Shuttle heatpipe than Liquid cooled.
Two hefty selling points, for me personally, will be the WiFi capabilities (if any) and the kinds of games offered. I've been hankering after a WiFi Media Player for a while but am gonna hang-fire having heard that the XBox 360 will be able to stream media. Obviously I take any comments from M$ with a hefty pinch of salt...
And as for consoles, well I've been a Nintendo-boy for years. Although their games do look good, it's the playability that's the key aspect for me. The pick-up-and-don't-put-down-for-13-hours addiction that they pioneered. With a little better 3rd party support and some more broad-minded marketing, I may still be a Nintendo-boy...
You've gotta love the optimism?
No?

If you needed further proof of the new graphical heights possible with Xbox 360, HD rendering and the lads at Bizarre Creations, three new screenshots were released last week following an appearance on the cable channel, MotorsTV. These are 100% in-game and are not pre-rendered, and are proof indeed that the trackside building detail lives up to the claims.

I can't wait for Xbox 360, ill be waiting outside GAME at midnight again probably, i hope PGR3 is as good as the previous PGR's and NFS:MW looks quite interesting too, a bit of the old style pre-underground NFS gameplay coming back into it, which can only be a good. :D
I highly doubt it will be liguid cooled, it doesnt really require it, it will cost more to manufacture and it will make it more complicated and prone to more problems than it needs to be, and imagine shipping them all around the world, the way those shipping companies throw them around, some will get a leak or become damaged and to accommodate the liguid cooling system, the console will need to be bigger than it is, and the orginal xbox suffered a little because of its size.

yea, it looks like it, but its not the same system that i was expecting, when people said "liquid cooling" i expected the big pumps and radiators and water pipes everywhere like desktop computer water cooling systems, but its not really like that, i think its just liquid contained in heatpipes on the heatsinks, but im not sure, i cant find much information on the cooling system of it, i guess ill see when it comes out.
