hey!
well i dont know if this is relevant for in here but i cant find
anywhere else to put it! lol
ok well after about 40hours of driving lessons my teacher told me to
put in for my test, so i did, but i failed (this was last tuesday)
i just want some other opinions on the driving examiner i had and
whether or not he was being fair or too harsh. i had 6 serious's and ill
list them below and could i have some opininions please?! lol

1. at a set of trafic lights there were two lanes, one for straight
ahead and one for turning right. i was told to get in the right hand lane
and did so correctly but whilst at the lights (i was the only one in
the right hand lane) the green circle for the left hand lane went to
green and i was waiting for my green arrow to come on, needless to say it
didnt for what seemed like an eternity and he failed me for not moving
forward opposite my exit road ...

2. my second failure was on a manover - i had to do a parallel park so
he asked me to pull in on the left, which i did and he said the van in
front (which was only about 1-2 car lengths away) id like u to pull up
and do a parallel park please and so i had to get out and pull along
side of him in a really little time space and as i was doing the manover,
because i was so close i was going to hit the van as i came in and so
he stopped me .. ok thats understandable but shouldnt i have been given
more time to get out and along side of him ?!

3. my third was for observations .. i didnt check my right shoulder ..
understandable

4. my fourth was for not putting my indicators on ... again
understandable

5. my fith was for putting my indicators on too early on the A38 ..
even though the 3line mark board was in site ..

6. my last was my steering, i went round a corner and i was a little
bit on the other side of the road.
so really its just 1,2,5,6 that i want some clarification for.
thanks ;)

 OMG, crossing lines is an automatic failure !!

keep practicing, It took me 3 attempts so dont lose heart, the bl***g thing gets more difficult every year, A cousin from Canada couldn't belive how difficult it was compared to theirs - then again there must be a reason why we have the highest road fatility rates per capita in Europe  (or at least we did)

to be fair obervation, indication and steering are all basic driving skills and you shouldnt really fail on those. parking and reversing is slightly more tricky but at the end of the day its what happens on the day that really matters. i never felt i was good enough to go in for my test but i still passed first time.

i had 50 hr lessons before i passed but then its down to how good the driver is and how long the waiting time is for ur test. i managed 3 minors on my test which was the opposite to my mock a week or so before. i think i got something like 10 majors because i work nights and my mock was at 8am...which wasnt too clever as i was pretty much falling a sleep at the wheel!! I passed first time but they say people who fail their first time are better drivers.

A filter light is always over-ridden by a full green light. Therefore you were in the wrong. Reason you didn't know? not reading the highway code I guess.

You failed to set up the maneuver correctly. If your initial positioning was good then the van would have been at no risk of impact.

Fair enough

5. my fith was for putting my indicators on too early on the A38 ..
even though the 3line mark board was in site ..

The '3line mark board' is 300 yards away from the junction. In a lorry you are taught (these days) to put the indicator on as you pass the 300 yard marker and not turn it off untill you are fully on the slip road. When you say 'In Sight' is that just in sight or a car length away? In sight on the a38 could mean half a mile away, and at car speeds on there it only takes 30 seconds to reach it.

6. my last was my steering, i went round a corner and i was a little
bit on the other side of the road.

Definately a serious fail that. You proved to the examiner that you were not in control of the vehicle when you crossed the lines.

never mind, a bit more practice and you will get it right. The trouble with people who think 'I Woz Robbed' don't seem to realise that it isn't just a way to drive, it concerns the safety of everyone around you. I am in no way perfect myself, took me 3 goes at the car test back in the mid 80's, but I learnt from it, and was able to pass my motorbike and hgv tests first time.

2nd'd Slam.

When I did my driving test not too long ago the main thing to rememebr is to just remain as cool as possible. For me I suppose that isn't too hard as I do a lot of hi tension sound/light work for concerts. Pretty much you have all the time in the world for manoeuvres I almost tried to rush my parelel park but once I slowed down it was much more controlled.

Crossing the line markings guessing that this was cutting an open corner. Out round the fens I do this all the time now, but for you test you just have to remember to do everything strictly by the rules. I passed first time 6minors, but I had been driving quite a bit before my test.

Don't loose heart. One of my friends failed his theory 5times, not becuase he was terrible at it but becuase he didn't have the confidence in him! Just :) *smile*, pick yourself up and try again :D

I knew I was right about this, I'll have to tell my mate, cheers! :)

Bad luck, I'm sure you'll do better next time, I (like Beerbaron) also failed my mock miserably but then passed first time with 7 minors. That thing about those who fail first time are better drivers maybe true 'cos I ain't the best at times and neither is my brother (first timer too) and he's just been banned for speeding!

I'm prepared to fail... so i guess if i pass, it'll be good, and if i fail, no biggie.

I'd still like to pass though

motorway driving? thought you couldnt drive on motorways as a learner - only after you've passed or as part of Pass Plus!?

good luck. my driving intructor always told me to make the examiner feel safe. he warned me about the chief examiner and how he was picky about turning into roads slowly....and guess who i had for my test, he must have been in a happy mood to just give me 3 minors. I wouldnt say that im the best driver in the world but id say im a fairly safe driver.

mind you, i think they should teach motorway driving. might educate people not to be numpties when playing on fast roads with big traffic.

i had 2 b*****d instructors...

Test 1
3 minors (in different things - 2 in speed and 1 in mirrors), failed for not entering box junction, even though where i was going was not clear

Test2
3 minors, no majors, all 3 minors in not looking left at juntions... i just didnt turn my head enough, my instructor told me i look with my eyes, but examiners dont look for that, they want head movements, plus there were only 2 lefts on the test, redid it with instructor on next lesson, it was a full right handed circle

Test3
Passed with 2 minors
Was a cool examiner for once - a geordie indian guy :)

I had a couple of different instructors, but they both told me that good drivers can fail if the examiner feels like it. Likewise, I've known plenty of bad drivers that passed first time and still can't drive (they even admit it!).

I did fail my first test when there was a lorry with it's hazards on at the top of a hill (T-junction). It was rush hour and there where lots of cars turning down the hill so I couldn't really overtake the lorry straight onto the junction. The examiner told me to do it, then failed me for it!

I guess you can just be in unlucky situations. Always do your test after nine (9:40 is good). The examiner will be in a good mood and the traffic will be non-existent. It worked for me and most of my (2nd) instructors pupils.

I did the pass plus thing too just to get that first motorway experience out of the way. Good job too seeing as I drive down the M4 every day!

I've been learning pretty solid since Febuary (my 17th) and i'm just about ready for my test in three weeks.

I've had loads of practice as well as lessons though and that helps a lot.

cpu121
28-04-2005, 20:44
I've had 4 2hr lessons so far, with another 2 booked. Maniac instructor took me on the the A1 on the 3rd lesson and it wasn't too bad, although that could be put down to the road being fairly quiet at the time. I've been going out with my parents at the weekend driving around the local area, although the Golf seems to have a nasty habit of being picky about how much rpms you're giving it and then refusing to catch if you stall it, but other than that it didn't seem too shabby.

Samsonite
28-04-2005, 22:10
I probably had about 40 hours of lessons by the time I passed (not particularly great - there was an 8 week waiting list to book my test after failing the first test though  ).

It was quite surprised when I had to open the bonnet of the instructors car at the start of the test and tell him about the bits inside - I had never opened the bonnet before, but just about worked it out. Half way through the test, the bonnet popped open on a fast road. I was asked to pull in at a bus stop and give it a good slam. I was in shock when I finished the test and was told that I passed.

The instructor said: "There is nothing on the test that says you need to know how to open and close the bonnet on your instructors car".

I didn't have the cheek to say: "It's a shame the test says you have to drive like a fool for 40 minutes though".

Colesy50
29-04-2005, 02:25
theres is though. ive been reading up on the practical and it says that at the instructors discretion, they can ask you to pop the hood and show them where to check the oil etc...

I didn't have the cheek to say: "It's a shame the test says you have to drive like a fool for 40 minutes though".

well, if you think the test drive is 'driving like a fool' then you really have no hope. you are driving to a) not be a danger to other road users and b) not be a danger to yourself or passengers.

I see too many near misses and impacts from people who think that they can 'just nip out' or 'jump the queue' or simply lose control through driving like a plank to think that driving standards in the uk are good enough.

Ok, my biggest fault is speeding when i'm working, but when you are limited physically to 56mph you tend to try and push the envelope a bit. I still don't fly round roundabouts though cos it is a touch too easy to tip over a wagon. I also try not to ride my bike much these days cos i have a very flexible wrist on the throttle.... I can't afford the points cos it would mean my job..

I'm not perfect myself, i would never claim to be, but having licences for pretty much any road vehicle means that you tend to learn a bit about driving. Totalling it up i have had 7 driving tests in all, 3 fails and 4 passes so I think i have a bit of driving knowledge. That and i am an old git....

Samsonite
29-04-2005, 19:58
Well I obviously do have hope slamdog, I've been driving every day for quite a while and never even had a scrape - I took the test very seriously - I was in fact joking (I really meant that I felt like a total fool trying to robotically do everything to get the examiner on my side).

My test (when I passed), was a annoying because the examiner made me pull in and take off every 10-20 meters for the final 15 minutes of the test. It was very erratic - it was to make sure I was using my right mirror and blind spot correctly when pulling out. He did make me feel stupid - but maybe that's why I've never had a prang?

I personally think the test is actually very good compared to what you have to do in many countries. A test will always make you feel like a fool because the pressure from the examiner is so high, you can't behave naturally and will make more mistakes than you normally would - this is caused by their reputation to fail careful drivers but let confident/stupid chavs pass first time.

One big problem with the test is that many chavs who cause accidents haven't even taken the test. People like myself, and obviously Mr Slamdog see the value in doing a test as it is the only sensible way of covering the basics of driving safely!

So do I - failed my first test due to being a bit cautious in the rush hour at a busy junction. I'm hardly a danger - make sure I know what is around me and what is going on in the distance - hence using mirrors all the time should become second nature.

Ok, my biggest fault is speeding when i'm working...

I tend to stick exactly to the speed limit. People overtake me when I'm going 50 on a 50 road. a few times I have driven past such drivers only to see them after being in a shunt.

Fair enough mate! One thing I have noticed is how people shout at lorry drivers on the motorway for staying in the left lane until the last minute when they need to change lanes - I think it's good of them to let the faster traffic past for as long as possible. If you know what they're are doing, you're less likely to get into a sticky situation.

tis the one thing i hate about text conversations... you cant tell the context of a post without blatant smileys or the like.

after reading your reply i see that i missed the fact the diving like a fool comment was tongue in cheek.

I hope you pass. i really do. The driving test is only a start. You really only learn to drive after you start to drive by yourself. I learnt the hard way when I was 17, crashing cars, getting nicked... I think that the new rules that mean you have to retake a test if you get 6 points in the first couple of years is a good thing.

Wow, didnt realise some peeps took that many lessons. I had 10 one hour lessons and failed my first test then had another 2 one hour lessons and passed my second test. So twelve hours in total.

In saying that after 30 minutes on my first lesson I was able to drive back on a rather challenging NSL road, just picked it up naturally :). Shame about the tests though as the examiners here are a bit of a nightmare :(.

You're right Slam - text can cause some strange mis-meanings. The amount of times my missus has got the wrong end of the stick...

It may sound obvious that where you take a test affects the chance of passing, but the DVLA does have a quota, so where there are lots of young learners - you had better get your cheque book out to pay for more tests!

Took 2 tests in Bristol years ago and failed both, passed in Cardiff 4 years later though. Main reason for having so many lessons in the end is that I started before university then carried on 3 years later when I could afford the rest of the lessons!

Meanwhile all my mates had loads of accidents while they were younger, I missed out driving until I was in my 20s. Learned from their mistakes!

well iv had 39 1hour lessons (inc the hour before my test) and then took my test last week .. and failed! :( and iv just had my 40th lesson today .. was a bit nervous though and dont really understand why!

we went and did all the things i failed on in my test and i did them all perfect! just goes to show that nerves do play a major part and i think that the examiners should do something to put people more at ease dont ya think

Samsonite
29-04-2005, 23:45
Definitely - that is the one thing that is wrong. There is no need for the examiner to be miserable. In fact the only time I had a nice examiner - I passed. I think I cracked some little joke before getting in the car and he seemed to have a sense of humour. Didn't want to mess around in the car though so I just did everything with a fake smile on my face to make it look like everything is cool!

Slamdog
29-04-2005, 23:48
was the same with my lgv1 test. the examiner was chatting about things in general and i was completely at ease with the bloke. at one roundabout I thought I had blown it, and told him so, but his reply was 'no you havent, you didn't cross the line' (give way line at a roundabout). from there on I just carried on and drove and he passed me with 3 minors.

Fat Jez
30-04-2005, 10:43
It took me 4 attempts to pass my test. 1st time I failed because I was nervous and kept forgetting to use my indicators and the 2nd time because I mounted the kerb while parallel parking. Then I had a break from learning for a few years while I finished my degree and started work. I then started lessons down in Bristol and started lessons again. The 3rd time I failed due to breaking the speed limit as I came over the top of a steep hill near Westbury-on-Trym in Bristol. I'd been gunning the motor to get up the hill and carried too much speed over the crest.

4th time I passed, with about 5 minors. A lot of it does seem to reflect on the Examiner you have and getting a miserable one certainly doesn't help. The last two attempts I made at my test, my asked if my instructor could come along, partly to reassure me and partly so that if I failed he would know what I did wrong and we could work on it afterwards. Once I passed my test, I went on and took the Pass Plus course, which was well worth it for the experience of driving at night, driving in bad weather and motorway driving (although I seemed to do all 3 in one evening, due to the lousy wet weather we get in Bristol during the winter).

Cheers,
Stephen

I passed first time with 9 minors, but really it is all about your confidence on the day. Steady your nerves before you do it and you'll most likely pass, otherwise you'll make stupid mistakes and rush things.

It really says something about the state of the British driving examination that I managed to pass first time, not only am I completely unaware of anything around me, I also have dire reactions and I'm a pretty useless driver! Still nothing like dropping it down to second and flooring it :)

That and i am an old git..lol Slamdog, me too. I passed first time [I was surprised ]I only had 2 lessons cos I needed to use the instructors car and that was the condition.[I booked a test first and got a date in 6 weeks so it was a bit sudden] Mind you this was also in the early 8O's, they didn't have theory tests and I never heard of "minors" etc .
One night a short while ago at 1 AM, hardly any traffic around, I got stitched up by the police for arguing, they thought I had been boozing but I hadn't so I was confidently mocking them and they decided to breathalize me...that proved I hadn't, so they insisted on taking me to the cop shop for another test which I also passed ok. Then they decided to bring a doctor in who gave me all these stupid tests....stand on one leg, touch nose with eyes closed blah blah. Bearing in mind I was using a walking stick as I had a fractured vertebra, I had trouble standing on one leg without the stick so the "doctor"[and I use the term loosely] decided to take a blood test. Weeks later I got the result that analgesic was found [prescribed by GP]and I was being done. Long story short , police b/s in court plus quacks b/s I got 12 months ban, no fine,no costs and told to retake test. B*****ds! police courts the magistrates couldn't find me not guilty]
The test these days is a lot harder I've been told.....I'm still on foot at this time but I'll put in for it again soon. :(
And no, I wasn't driving fast or erratically although in court they tried to "hint" that I had.

Sorry shoulda stuck this in the Rant forum but this thread brung it all back.

Will let u all know how it went etc. :(

Nerves are a problem for most people on their test. When I took mine is i was nervous before hand but when i got in the car I was fine. I spent most of my test just chatting to my examiner, he was a decent guy which helps too, and it felt more like 15 mins than 40.

If you keep your cool you'll be fine. Good luck.

25-08-2005, 16:49
Well well well, i passed my driving test! I was so nervous, but the examiner was a nice bloke, really made me feel at ease. I passed with only 4 inors which is cool. He nearly failed me, apparently, at one point cos i was doing 35 in a 30 zone! phew, that was close though. Overall it wasnt as bad as i though. Throughout i kept thinking...."i made a mistake there", "theres another minor fault" but it ended up being fine.
Advice to anyone else taking their test soon.....DONT WORRY! have faith in your ability, be confident.

Anyway, next stage.... driving alone! lol scary thought, should be ok though .. i hope. Good luck to anyone else having their test soon. :D

Don't crash!!! :p

Yeh make sure you do jerked movements to show you're using your mirrors.

Actually shouldn't your driving instructor be telling you this?

I gave the test this morning but failed.

1. Hit the kerb while reversing round the corner
2. While turning into dual carriage way, took right hand lane instead of left hand lane. I was about to switch to left hand, but the instructor asked me to turn right ahead at the roundabout. Nonetheless this was a serious fault.

So the above two were ticked off as 2 serious faults.

In all 14 faults including the above two.

Funnily I never made those serious faults while taking lessons !! (May be because I had prompts from my instructor!)

Ofcourse I've booked for the second and hopefully final test in 30 days time(I couldn't get anything sooner)

Chin up. Failing the driving test isnt the worst thing that could happen to you. You'll pass next time.

Oh man, just had another lesson (2 more before my test Fri) and it didn't go too bad but hit the kerb on parallel park.

And now I've just found out I've got to answer questions about checking the car for safety things - like they don't ask enough in your test. We must have like the most difficult driving test on earth. It feels like they are making it so you don't pass!

hmm, you have yours before mine, mine is on the 26th, big queue :(

Don't worry about the car check questions, its simple stuff like how would you check the oil, check all the lights work etc etc

Anyone done the IAM advanced driving test?

http://www.iam.org.uk/aboutus/advancedtest/

I've been out with some of the instructors for the past few weeks, and I'm just about ready to sit my test.

It's a bit more demanding than the plain ol' driving test. Includes things like a giving a commentary as you're driving, and using the police system of car control, but there's a mountain of information on the internets.

I'd be very interested to hear more about that, I want to improve my driving and think an IAM course might be a step in the right direction.

Definately, some insurance companies offer a discount once you pass. I just sort of turned up one week in January, friendly people and quite lax, you don't have to turn up every week for instance.

Passed, Phew! 12 minors, I'm quite a laid back person but it was very nervewracking, but kept my cool driving-wise. Thank god that's all overwith! Now to party :D

Wow, never knew about this thread. I shall contribute..

Finally passed my practical on the 4th of January this year. Got three minors my first time around, which was impressive I thought. My examiner was also a former Traffic Cop too, so I thought it was a pretty good mark to get from someone with a decent background in road safety. :D

Thanks all! My 12 minors were slight things like changing lanes late and not putting my handbrake on everytime I stop for more than a second but I went through these with him so will try to improve!

Have a car already so just need to sort out insurance (which hopefully should be about 400/500?) and then off we go! :D

And now that you've passed you can now drive normally and use all the ****ty habits that you've kept hidden whilst learning :p

Seriously; congrats and take care.

There's no point waiting to get your theory done. Book it, pass it, get it over with. There's no point being ready for your practical if you've got to wait __ weeks (whatever the waiting time is in your area) to take your theory (assuming you pass first time, which I didn't), and then wait another __ weeks to take your practical.

ArTizan
05-09-2008, 14:02
I had to book both my theory and prcatical around 4 weeks in advance as that was the first free spot they had!

Book your theory, then you have a date to work to :)

Cosmo_1847
05-09-2008, 14:05
After passing your theory test you have 2 years to pass your pratical.

Archaon
05-09-2008, 14:14
Yeah, but if he's at a test-passing standard now (or will be in a few weeks worth of lessons) and he actually wants to pass quickly (as most people do) then he needs to get booking ASAP.

IIRC I waited around 3 weeks for a theory booking and 5-6 weeks for a practical.

I passed :D

First time.

4 minors:
2 for driving too slow (I normally drive too fast so I really tried to slow down and apparently did the opposite)
1 for steering
1 for doing something wrong whilst taking off.

Edit: And damn you Forthy...

Cosmo_1847
06-04-2009, 14:33
Congrats dude! Not many people pass first time so you've done well :)

Keep in mind that in the first 2 years you can only get 6 points, after that you can get 12. Not that you should be getting any at all. :)

1 for doing something wrong whilst taking off.

Is it expensive to learn how to fly? :p

Congrats, I passed first time too but I got 7 minors :(

Good lad. :)

Bit of advice though...don't do what I did and get it revoked before your 2 year probation is up...it really sucks.

Turn the card over, and look at the date of full entitlement of your B category. It's 2 years from that date.
