View Full Version : Asus star Ice vs ThermalRight XP-120

I'm looking for something to replace my AMD stock HSF.
I find the stock HSF very loud so it's time to replace it. I was thinking fof the ThermalRight XP-120 which some say is a great, silent HSF. But then I looked at the Asus star ice. But the review I've read, it's powerful, looks great but loud :(
I've always wanted a Asus star ice, but I'm scared that it's going to be too loud to live with.
So what one should I buy? I would rather take powerful over noise.
Also, is there a better HSF on the market now? I haven't looked into HSFs for months
Thanks

One product is a truly superb cooler with the only downside being that you must carefully check whether it is physically compatible with your other hardware before purchase. It's truly customisable with the user able to opt for any fan, from a 120mmx38mm high output screamer, to a 120mmx25mm low volume silent model.
The other is a fairly gimmicky effort from Asus.
Your call.

I checked on the ThermalRight website and they didn't show if my motherboard would be compatible with it.

a) You've had the answer that the XP-120 is a better product
b) You've stated that the Thermalright website showed your motherboard to be compatible
c) Assuming you meant to say that it DIDN'T state compatibility, you haven't stated what mobo you have or what case you are putting it in.

I've got a Jeantech apollo (it's huge!) and a Gigabyte K8NF-9 MOBO

Case-wise you'll be fine however the mobo issue is a gamble
According to TR, of the Athlon64 Gigabyte boards, the K8NSNXP-939 is compatible and the K8NS is not.
Therefore, your best bet is to download the images of the above two boards plus the image of your mobo and then spend a long while comparing them and working out why one is compatible, why the other isn't and whether your mobo will be.
It's not foolproof but you should be able to work out if it's a certain capacitor config, ram slot placement etc.
Don't buy the Asus thing.
I should think the asus will be a gamble for compatibility aswell... unless it has more clerance than it looks.
The XP-120 is so much nicer....

The ASUS does have a lot of clearance, (more than the XP-120 as that need to pust the caps out of the way on my board according to the site.) As for cooling it's not that bad keeps my cpu idle at less than 25 degrees C. It does look a little gimikey (is that even a word :D ) but its not a bad kooler. I need to get my hands on an xp-120 though so I can see if that can keep my temps down better.

I bought a coolermaster aero-lite for £10 (inc postage) has done me good, and looks cool too.
adjustable and supposedly better than the more expensive copper one (aero 7 plus)
the reviews pushed me to buying the hsf, however if you have the money a xp-120 and a decent 92mm fan would be great

Doesn't fit my motherboard according to Thermalright Tech Support... oh well.
Unless someone can tell me a better HSF, the Star looks like it will be in my rig ;)

Well if you are considering serious big bad sod-off mother-loving HSF combos, have you looked at the Zalman 7700-Cu? Your specific motherboard appears on the official compatibility list.
But if your heart is set on the Asus, perhaps consider the TT Silent Tower? Very similar design but has the advantage that the fans are replaceable to allow customisation.

It has been out of the Zalman 7700-Cu or the Asus Star ice.
I'm still in favour of the Star Ice because of it's killer looks.
Is there a review that puts these two HSFs up head to head?

That......is Finnish.
I would suggest that the benchmarks are useful? If you can't decipher them then go to www.foreignword.com (http://www.foreignword.com) for some spot translations, e.g:

rasitus = Stressed
I have the star Ice, and it is very cool to look at, but thats not the most important thing... the cooling power is very very good, beats my friends water cooling. It comes with a simple fan controller which is either automatic, on the front in a floppy bay or on the back. On the lower speeds its very quiet and this is really all yor going to use unless your an overclocking mentalist. When you do turn it up it does tend to sound like the jet engines it looks like. (i have tried this for about an hour and it kept my procesor very cool.)
One bit of warning though is that it is very big, and heavy. To give you an idea on how heavy this ******* is, when i get my new case I will almost certainly be securing it to the motherboard tray, as well as the actuall motherboard. Oh and never transport your PC with this thing attached it will decimate your motherboard. So not one for the LAN parties..
Other than those warnings it is an exelent cooler, i highly recomend it. And it does look very funky with those LED's going. And the price is exelent as well.

I just E-mailed Kustom and they said they won't be able to get a red one for me :(
Well, it looks like a Star Ice is out of the question and I don't think that I can replace the Zalman fan with a red L.E.D fan.
Should I just save up for a cheap watercooling kit?

Maybe not Will... but I'm quite sure Broadband is aware of - or could certainly have found out for himself, where else to buy a red one from if he really wanted one!
It's not the done thing on these forums to mention or encourage members to buy from competitors, when Kustom sell the same product themselves
go for the xp-90 and a 92mm panaflo fan...
