Nice. Pokey enough, isn't it?!

i seriously doubt it was moved from a stop position. lol

what do you mean ? it did not move ??? u dont think the car moved ??

the car was stationary

nice... u'd have thought there wouldn't have been enough friction on the tracks to get enough grip! want a long distance shot of it working in daylight now just to confirm what it's doing :D - six

I am the guy building it - you think I spent all that time working on something to just fake it ? you are a strange lot !

Car moved from a stop position - you even see that on the tape - that tank weighs about as much as me - it requires two people to lift, theres a lot of grip on those tracks

some people worry me with their lack of intelligence on here.. seriously.

have you never seen robot wars? i know it sucks but they show these things pulling trucks all the time, it's more than possible to do from a stand still.

btw dave, fog lights off, else i'll send a copy to the rozzers and they’ll be round to crush it. (drives me mad) :)

NickB
25-01-2005, 10:18
I like it, now all you have to do is stick a mini-ITX (or possibly nan-ITX if they get round to releasing it) system on it and get rid of the remote!

well actually, there is a complete telemetry system ready to go in - location is shown in real time on a laptop overlaid on an aerial map, also two live video feeds and an audio channel - all to a tested range of 3km :)

DaveMark
i was saying, i doubt the robot pulled the car from a stationary position, yes.
I did not say you’re lying or it’s a fake. But from the movie it does not look like it would heavy enough traction/grip to pull it from a stationary position. It is hard to tell on a dark movie like that though.

Anyway, does anyone seriously still watch Robot wars? I used to watch that show on BBC two but haven’t seen it for years! Is it still on?

BTW slarti, those robots on RW tend to have more than one 12v battery.

Jamez_Warner
26-01-2005, 00:05
no most tend to run at 24v which mine is currently being modified to run on for extra power. That small battery lasts under a minute under load

RW is done and dusted, no more are planned

I'll do a nice daylight vid next weekend

do those tracks have rubber feet?

rusty
26-01-2005, 02:27
no [M]uuhh - they are just metal tracks

i think you should consider butchering some old car tyres for strips of rubber and rivet them as rubber "ribs" to the track segments.

it would not only give you more grip on hard surfaces, but the rib effect would give you more grip in the soft and wet stuff too...

would be pretty easy as well.

just a thought

[M]uuhh
26-01-2005, 05:19
yeah you should put some feet on them. you will get a lot more grip, and a lot less slip ;)

I think that on Robot Wars, Sir Killalot was so heavy and powerful, it could pull an arctic.......

Jamez_Warner
26-01-2005, 09:55
yup, i intended to do that, just got to work out the best way of affixing the rubber...

26-01-2005, 10:11
You mean an 'Artic'? As in Articulated lorry i presume? Sir Killalot was so funny though, if you saw him coming for you, just run up some stairs :p

Or an arctic house? (iceberg?)

Jooster
26-01-2005, 10:42
yeah.... i meant as in an articulated lorry.

and stairs... his only weakness :p

Ok time for an update :), I noticed we had alot of doubts on this thred and people were saying no it cant pull a car (even when they had video proof:p)

Here is a 2nd Video of the car pull test (24v Verson, Pulling James as well as the car) This time we have more light.

Ok just posting this on behalf of my mad friend who is building the thing.

He has once again re designed it now he knows the track system works well

New Motors are going in:

http://homepage.ntlworld.com/davemark/images/motor.jpg

The Frame has been totaly re worked:

http://homepage.ntlworld.com/davemark/images/newframe.jpg
http://homepage.ntlworld.com/davemark/images/newframe2.jpg

This now makeing the whole thing longer by a foot and also a bit wider.

And here is a mock of what he is planning :)

http://homepage.ntlworld.com/davemark/images/mock2.jpg

There will be a 3rd guide cog to give the front end more of a angle to clime more :) (stairs for an example)

lol....

Just seen this, lol.. is still looking good!

Nice one warner, maybe you could sell your car and drive it to work, or alternitively keep it in your boot until you get a break-down... could have an attempt at towing you home... lol... would need a fair bit of fuel?!?

:p

Would be a cool vid to see it pulling you on shki's across the snow, lol...
or have a trailor with a seat in for the driver and his remote control...
(lol, an original form of transport at least...)

Thats a monster!!

Looking nice.

Was wondering where the tracks came from. Did you make them from scratch or nick them off something else. Also what are those motors spec's. What gearing (If any) do you have.

Just Curious

hey, the tracks come from www.rexnord.com - it's designed for bottle conveyors. Expect to pay over £400 new though when you include drive hardware ! best to try and find a factory throwing some out

Motors are rated at 800watts each at 24V, so 1600watts of power with both...

gearing is a 1:3 ratio with MOD1.5 spur gears in the gearbox next to motor, and then a further 1:3.5 from the sprocket through the chain to the rear drive sprocket

like so:

If you ever skid on ice or snow and end up in a ditch, that would be pretty handy to have in your car boot to get you out. :)

What' s it' s purpose though, just the challenge making it, or some other reason ?

Jamez_Warner
25-02-2005, 23:58
erm yeah I do these random things all the time - just ask davemark !

It's just for a laugh, I've had a few tiny model ones and wondered how big I could build one. Also handy for shows and stuff

James

How does it get so much power and grip to pull the car? What sorta motor is in there? Electric I'm guessing?

Jamez_Warner
28-02-2005, 22:10
yup 2 two 24V reliance motors, usually used in golf carts etc

3600watts peak on each giving a total peak power of 7200watts - or about 10hp
Obviously would soon overheat if kept stalled like this for any length of time !

car pull on version 1 needed me stood on top to get enough grip, but this one will have rubber pads for tarmac grip plus it weighs more than old one + me put together

James

Euphoria

What do you use to give it all the weight? Kg weights?!!

It is an impressive machine! Bit more powerful that my TMAXX!!

DaveMark
28-02-2005, 22:20
It’s huge and made of heavy metal and thick metal track! No weights. Just big and heavy

davemark

Jamez_Warner
28-02-2005, 22:23
well consider each of the rear track sprockets are solid steel, the tracks are all 4mm plate stainless steel, 30kg of batteries and lots of angle iron etc. inside. plus heavy old motors

James

Euphoria
