View Full Version : Looking for a specific bit of software...
Right.... Problem...
Need the web based catalogue thingy and the one that looks like it would fill my needs is very very similar to what the online movie rental places have. You know the sites... blockbusters, lovemovies, moviesonline, cheekydvd etc....
does anyone know the actual name of the packages? I can't believe that they are all bespoke in house designs as they are far too similar to not be a commercially availiable bit of software.
If anyone knows of something else similar please let me know as well...
Thanks up front if you can help...
osCommerce is sort of similar :)
http://www.oscommerce.com
I did find it in the end but it a heavy commercial script that costs megabucks..
I was looking at using oscommerce and taking out all of the money side of things. The other option I was looking at was phpnuke with some form of alphabetical gallery...

just out of interest, what do you need it for?
I'm looking to put my movie collection online for people to browse it. More for information than sales.. after all, selling copyright material is illegal.....
what I currently have is http://lovemovies.net/mainstream/ (there is more but I am only playing at the moment) but would like to do something that is a) searchable and b) easy to navigate.
That current list is thrown out of movie collector and then split with split list. It is too quick and dirty and really just is an overview whereas something a bit more profesional would give me more scope to show what I wanted, IE. latest additions, more site info etc. with possibly a login function to track regular browsers of the site.
If your looking at phpnuke check out coppermine
http://coppermine.sourceforge.net/
can be adapted easily
hmm looks interesting.. will see if it can be modified to work as a film database. Thanks for that suggestion.

Interesting... I've had exactly the same plans for years now, something I've got planned and even half-designed as a PHP project, when I get the spare time. Problem is, I've still not yet started anything with it bar the database design, so I guess it'll be in the same state in another 2 years!
I know exactly what you mean, though, I had the same idea - also including a little "tracking" side of it, for registered friends, so that I could track who's borrowed what.
yup the alarIt package would be perfect, a complete dvd rental package to collate, and browse the entire list and also to maintain tracking of loans to mates. The trouble is it looks similar to the way sage etc licence the software, more as a maintenance contract rther than a software purchase.
I have not found any other company providing a rival package so if you did write it Brum then you would clean up. Damn... I wish this was simpler! One hell of a project to get the database fully relational and then hit a php front end to it...

Ahh, the database design's the easy bit - well, depending on how feature-rich you want it, naturally :)
I'm a bit wrapped up with MythTV, fitting a new kitchen, bathroom, decorating a whole house and fixing a rally car - so finding the time to rattle out loads of useful PHP is... errm... ;)
If I ever get it sorted I'll give you a shout, just don't hold your breath :)
lol.. no worries...
I have all sorts of 'mental projects'. only held back by time, money and lack of skills...
some of the physical projects go the same way!.. I have a garden that needs levelling into 2 or 3 tiers. at the moment it has a 16 foot difference in height from one end to the other. That project is held back by lack of interest and motivation....

Ah, you mean your garden needs defragging... :p
It needs bloody nuking and starting again.....
Thats easy....
At a command prompt type, fdisk Garden to set your 3 partitions. Remember to format afterwards or you'll getg zero growth ! ;)
