View Full Version : Get the best out of my graphics card.. how?
first off: I have a Geforce Nvidia 4600 ti 128mb (see sig for rest of system)
The question: How do I get the best out of it? I have the latest drivers but i've heard (read from other posts) that you can change other settings/drivers to make it perform better.
I haven't the faintest clue where to start, I've only recently (a month ago) got in to the quiet & cool thing, then I bought half life 2 and rediscovered counter strike! I get 62 fps in the video performance test, but thats only on less than medium settings (it drops right down if i put the settings up any more) and I made the mistake of playing it on my brothers computer which he just built p4 3.6 512mb ddr2 256mb geforce etc and now I crave more, can't afford much though - i'm about to buy a second hand 2.53 (2.63?) p4 and new motherboard (for pitance off of a mate) - will this improve matters? Whats limiting me here?
thanks in advance!
having had a quick look around I found this (http://www.techspot.com/tweaks/geforce/index.shtml) site which though quite old seems to have most bases covered. Hope this is useful to you. I can't give you any pearls of wisdom on a personal level being an ATI man! :D
My first suggestion would be to make sure you're using the most up-to-date drivers. The v71.20 XP's (http://www.guru3d.com/newsitem.php?id=2164) were released just yesterday.
Or you might wanna try some pre-optimzed drivers - like those by TC Magazine (http://www.tcmagazine.info/modules.php?name=News&file=article&sid=8724) (I'm using their ATI drivers ;))
For tweaking.... why not give the official nVidia nTune 2005 (http://www.softpedia.com/get/Tweak/Video-Tweak/nVidia-nTune.shtml) utility a bash.
"The NVIDIA nTune is the easiest, fastest, and safest performance optimization and monitoring application available for your PC.
Incorporating more features than any other system tuning or monitoring product, NVIDIA nTune is the only performance tuning application designed exclusively for your NVIDIA nForce-based PC.
With NVIDIA nTune your system can automatically adjust to maximum performance settings for intense gaming or will detect that you’ve inserted a DVD and will set the system to quiet operation.
This intelligent application offers the safest way to change bus speeds, memory timings, and even tweak voltages.
Changes are made easily within a simple-to-use Windows interface—so you no longer need to make changes to the BIOS or reboot your system"
That one's fairly new on the scene, and I don't know anything about it... but one nVidia tweaker I have heard of is RivaTuner (http://www.guru3d.com/rivatuner/). It might be worth trying both t' see whicb one's best?
Let us know how you get on/manage t' get any improvements eh. It might be beneficial to other forum members ;)
Your CPU and ram will be holding you back in cssource. There are some useful tweaks in Gotfrag (http://www.gotfrag.com/cs/features/comments/1008/) for tweaking css. Experiment with them and I'm sure you can improve your performance.
i find plugging it into a monitor helps.....
seriously, though.. the other guys have it sussed really... drivers, drivers and drivers....
Fireblade, nTune is for nForce 2 and 3 motherboards; not for nVidia graphics cards. I just tried it.
Aaah! I hadn't tried it meself (obviously!), but had I read the blurb properly, I'd've realised that meself. My bad  It still sounds good tho' :D
Guess he'll have t' stick wi' RivaTuner then :p
RivaTuner is scary when you use it the first time. :P
Well yeah... it might just be a bit intimidating for the first-timer :D
But I've found another one which might be less so... NVTweak (http://fileforum.betanews.com/detail/NVTweak_formerly_Coolbits/1096388263/1) (formerly CoolBits) ;)
