Optical drives are usually intended for horizontal use Viral - although they can obviously be used vertically as well.

What case are you using? That would help us give you a definitive answer.... but I really don't foresee any problem?

Re BIOS updating: There should be absolutely no consequence of not updating it. In fact... unless you're experiencing problems... or can't do something which is only likely to be remedied by updating the BIOS... I'd suggest you leave well alone :D

In that 'case' (:D)... you'll have no problem!

BTW: You didn't need to/shouldn't link to a competitor site! Just the name/case model woulda sufficed. FYI... Kustom (http://www.kustompcs.co.uk/acatalog/Cases2.html) themselves sell a wide variety of different cases

Anyways... what speed is the old drive ? If you've had it a while... it might be worth considering buying a completely new drive? You can pick up a 52x/32x/52x CDRW (http://www.kustompcs.co.uk/acatalog/Kustom_PCs_Shop_CD_RW___Combo_Drives_38.html) for just £20... or a CDRW/DVD drive combo unit (from that same page) for not much more.

Or get right up-to-date by buying a DVD +/- RW (http://www.kustompcs.co.uk/acatalog/Kustom_PCs_Shop_DVD_RW_Drives_85.html) for under £50 ;)
