Hey, My Dads HiFi is slowly dying, so I thought a good christmas present would be a new one.
His current is nothing spectacular, its got a 3 cd changer with 2 tape decks and the usual radio stuff, and I believe is made by Alba.
Unfortunately my budget isnt quite spectacular either, Im looking to spend a maximum of £100 and would prefer a brand new purchase (so no Ebay or anything!)
Ive done a little research, and both Micro and Mini HiFi systems have been cropping up, whats the difference?
Does anyone have any advice of a good place to browse through some models (or a Good Model specifically!)
Obviousely I'll be doing the runs down to currys and dixons etc, but a good place to start would be nice :)
Cheers for any help you guys/gals can provide.
...nd I believe is made by Alba.

Micro systems are smaller ;)

If you've got the space your better going for seperate full sized components. If it has to be a mini system then the Denon's are pretty good, although probably outside your budget.

I hate to sound like a Hi-Fi snob, but at £100 there's very little argument for choosing one system over another - they're all going to be pretty low-end. So pick whatever you like the look of, that has the features you need - and at least listen to them first (although granted, in Dixons/Argos/etc there's not much of a listening environment).
I cannot express how important I think it is that you steer clear of Goodmans, though :)
How about this...?

That Sony is ok. My uncle bought it about 5 months ago.. and he thinks its fine for what he needs it for. Its not the best of all hi-fi's but it does the job :D
Just givin ya a little review :p ;)
your budget is keeping you away from hi-fi but like brumster says, at that price they are all gonna be about the same

Thanks everyone, I knew from the start that my budget would severley limit my choice, but its still a vast improvment over his current system.
The sony one certainly looks nice, and shall be keeping an eye out for one when I go shopping.
Cheers
My girlfriend bought one of these recently:

It sounds pretty good and it looks pretty cool too. Its also a DVD player as well. We have it as our bedroom hi-fi. The only bad thing about it is the cooling fan is quiet loud - altho' it is variable speed.
Also, the one in the link only has 3 speakers - a 5.1 version is available too.

i dunno.. i prefer the panasonics over sonys @ the moment.. though aint seen any entry level ones @ work recently. (i work @ comet).. think really it's a case of taking a cd down to ur local retailer and having a listen to everything! oh yeah... micro hifi's normally look beta but mini's often r betta value for money cuz they're larger and not so many pple buy them- six

It's a shame you can't stretch your budget a little further. This is a blinding little system for the money (see below), I have the MD30 (slightly older) and I can't believe how good it is for the dosh. It won one of What HiFi's products of the year awards. Can't your mum/brother/sister or someone go in on it with you? Sorry if I am sounding a little snobbish too, but you really aint going to get anything special for £100 and would think of another gift idea if £100 is absolutly maximum.
Take a look...

might find it cheaper if you hunt around.

Well I went for a drive today and had a look at loads of mini systems for under £100, and Im rather impressed at some of the apparent build quality of some of them. I saw a nice one also for £150 which had some pretty meaty speakers and seemed like a good one if I were to stretch to 150.
I also tested a few of them with a CD, and compard with my dads current one, they were awesome, Ill keep looking around and let you know what I decide on.
Cheers

hahaha
Now thats out the way..
For a hundred quid, get the one that either looks best (and i dont mean flashing lights) or does the most things, cos sounds quality aint gonna be a factor in it i'm afraid..

Listen to Dangerous Dom. I also have a varient of that Denon system and it is cracking quality for a small unit.
Save a few more pennies or see if you can grab a decent on on ebay
