Got myself a broadband ethernet router and network card.
installed the network card without a prob, hooked on modem/router to telephone line and followed the instructions of going to:
All Programs > Accessories > Communications > Network Connections and clicking properties of my network card and telling it to automatically obtain IP
then i went into internet explorer and went to connections and then never dial, after this i tried logging into the http:// address it gives me but nothing happens any idea's where im going wrong?
i was thinking of doing a fresh install of windows and i disabled some of the unneeded service's win xp runs would it be this?

Try it with a proper browser (Opera/Firefox and the like) and see if you have the same problem. I've always had immense difficulty getting IE to switch from a dialup to an ethernet internet connection.

ok this morning the network card is suddenly working fine, connecting to the page needed to input my details and it worked fine, infact im connected now but the problem is MSN wont connect and its not loading every page e.g. this site loads fine (possibly slower then my usb modem??) but ebay wont load
any clue's as to what setting i need to adjust?
what 'unneeded' services did you disable?

was ages ago i followed the viper 411 guide, cant remember which ones exactly
sounds like your router hasn't assigned an IP.
Make sure DHCP is set up right.
try setting your MTU down to 1400 re the problems with messenger etc....

MTU how exactly can this be adjusted?
Using something like DrTCP ;)
http://www.dslreports.com/drtcp
or your router most likely has a setting for it on the setup page.
what is the router?
you can usually access the setup page by typing http://192.168.0.1 into a internet browser or start ---> run
it may however require a password depending on how it's been set up.

its a binatone 2100 adsl router
i logged into that page initially to setup my isp's user details, i will try adjusting my mtu speed to 1400 but what is DHCP all about?

UPDATE:
Changed my MTU to 1400 and the second i plugged in the router and went online ebay worked aswel as msn messenger thanks alot for that.
i ran the speed test and here are the results, let me know if there is anything i should change.
1. Your Tweakable Settings:
Receive Window (RWIN): 65535
Window Scaling: off
Path MTU Discovery: ON
RFC1323 Window Scaling: OFF
RFC1323 Time Stamping: OFF
Selective Acks: ON
MSS requested: 1360
TTL:
(less any hops behind firewall)
127
TTL remaining: 115
2. Test 146000 byte download
Actual data bytes sent: 146000
Actual data packets: 108
Max packet sent (MTU): 1400
Max packet recd (MTU): 1380
Retransmitted data packets: 0
sacks you sent: 0
pushed data pkts: 5
data transmit time: 1.929 secs
our max idletime: 137.4 ms
transfer rate: 46063 bytes/sec
transfer rate: 368 kbits/sec
This is not a speed test!
transfer efficiency: 100%
3. ICMP (ping) check
Minimum ping: 88 ms
Maximum ping: 89 ms
Ping stability:
88 89 89 89 88 88 89 88 88 89
Notes and recommendations:
Upload packet less than your MTU (FAQ #1492)
Good data stream (no/few rexmits)
Notes and recommendations:
Looking good
i personally dont have a clue what all those figures mean but it cant be to bad
