View Full Version : wired to wireless network
hi i currentley have two computers on a wired network, which works fine. I have bought a new note book which has a wireless card installed, i would like add a wireless connection between the current wired network and notebook could someone advise me what i will need to buy
If you're using a hub for your wired network a wireless access point will sort you out. You plug that into your hub, and connect to the access point with your laptop.
I've got a linksys one that has worked well for me.
i' am not using a hub just got a straight wired connection, will i need to buy a hub and a access point
That would be the easiest way, yes. But if you're prepared to do a bit of research there is another way.
You'll need a wireless network card in your desktop pc and use that to create a so called 'ad-hoc' network to your laptop. It's the wireless equivilent of a crossover cable (when you only do it with 2 pcs anyway).
I'm not certain of the specifics of how you do this, but I do know it's possible. I suggest google.

You could get a wireless router, these generally have a built in 4 port switch. The router part of it would be redundant, but it's going to be cheaper and easier than two seperate boxes ;) Of course if you've got broadband and want to share the internet connection between the three PC's would need a router anyway :)
