View Full Version : FSB
Hi,
Is there actually any advantage of buying an athlon with a 266 FSB ? Surely its easier to buy an athlon with a 200 FSB and change it from 100 to 133 ? Am I right ? Are there any benefits of buying a 266 FSB athlon other than making my wallet slightly lighter ? Thanks.
Will.

To the Overclocker who knows how to unlock the L1 bridges there is no difference, it's just an Athlon Tbird with different multiplier settings.
Correct me if I'm wrong but don't the bridges come un locked from the factory ? Only a bit of pencil work if they don't.

No, you need to unlock them yourself - pencil isn`t the best, it can rub off easily, which means a blank screen on startup . Its best to use the silver conductive paint that you get to repair car heated windscreens with.
We`re looking at getting premade adhesive strips that sit over the top of your L1 bridges and don`t come off , would be interested to hear feedback on this idea...
The only problem is that conductive paint is permanent which means you are screwed if you mess up. Would you be able to remove these adhesive strips ?

conductive paint can be removed using diluted thinners...
I imagine the strips will be removable, but whether they go back on again remains unanswered...
How about a PCB that you stick over the athlon processor (adhesive) making sure it is aligned. The connects are then wired through to the side (allowing space for HSF units) where the bridges are connected with a simple set of jumpers, that you can add or remove to either break or create connections.

http://www.plycon.com/trace.htm < this is the stuff
most of the 1.2ghz chips have the L1 bridges in tact, i think amd did this on purpose because they didnt think that they could clock up very high, not sure about that though, but from the chips that ive seen, every 1.2ghz chip was unlocked from the factory, and ive seen quite a few ;)

Well we have a 1.2ghz tbird sitting in the shop right now, we'll have a look at it today, it's never really crossed my mind to have a nosey 8)
The adhesive strips are a good idea..
But $23.99??? eeek...

That cost is for 3 of them though, we plan to sell them singly - just think how much a new processor would cost you if you short the bridges and toast it :)
