Looks a little high to me!!!!

I would remove the thermal compound and try again. Sounds like a little too much has been used.

aparantly the mobo takes the temp from the die, not the surround
so itr reports higher

Which Epox board have you got as the latest ones using the KT333 chipset take the temperature from a diode within the socket which is monitored by a Winbond IC & not the XP's internal diode? The older boards used the VIA Southbridge to monitor the system.

As far as I am aware of, only true AMD chipsets will monitor using the internal diode, and the majority of manufacturers disabled this function when designing there boards from the AMD reference models.

My Asus A7V333 runs a 1800XP @ 59ºC with a Zalman and is very stable. It also reads temp from CPU.

hmmm, anything over 50C i would consider dodgy, but 70 is way too high, however if the puter seems stable then the reported temp is probably wrong - whats the case temp?

If it's reading the temp from the XP's diode then 72 that's probably too high.I currently
get 51c here on idle with a Volcano7.This
temp reading's taken from the XP's diode.
Socket diode temp is 39c.Case temp is 22c.This is on an XP1900(not o/clocked)

I stand corrected, the 8K3A families Winbond IC does actually read from the internal CPU diode WITH THE RIGHT SOFTWARE. If you use the latest version of Motherboard Monitor and select 'Winbond Diode 2' for the CPU, this should then enable you to read the internal CPU's diode temperature.

And if that is what i am reading, which it seems to be, what should it be?

Unless your case is a hollowed out block of solid aluminium or copper, you've GOTTA use at least one case fan to remove the hot air.
