MagicGate Memory Sticks

Does anyone know what the difference is between a Magicgate memory stick and a plain old memory stick ?

I've googled around but couldn't find a simple explanation, and more to the point, do I have to buy the former to fit in my Sony Network Walkman ?

Magic gate supports parallel transfer and rates up to 160mbits where as the plain memory stick does not support high speed, also the magic gate enables copyright protection which is within sony of sonys products like those using the Atrac compression system.
