View Full Version : Shared Documents Disappearance!
Hey guys, got a lil...well kinda big problem...
Somehow my shared documents folder has disappeared from C:\Documents and Settings.... theres no All Users at all, only the users on the computer.
Thing is, i can still get into it via the shortcut i have created, and windows media player can play all my music with no trouble.
But Acid pro will not go into the folders, therefore i cannot use any of my loops!
I dont know how something can disappear, but not disappear...
Anyone got any ideas, or is it a case of me shooting my computer!
Cheers guys

Sounds like the "Hidden" flag has been set on that folder...
goto "Tools" then "folder options" then click on the "view" tab
You should a line saying "Hidden files and folders" click on the "Show hidden files and folders" option then "apply" then "OK"
hopefuly you should now be able to see your Shared docs folder
First thing i tried mate :P
Afraid it isnt anythin as simple as that

if you do a search, can you find your files? then try Right clicking on a file you know is in that folder then select "open containing folder" then click the "up" icon atthe top of the windor and see where you end up :)
just wondering where is your shortcut pointing to??
XP has an annoying habbit of renaming folders of diffrent users, so the Administrators 'MY Documents' folder is viewed as 'Administrators documents' to every other user when they log on.
I can find files in the folder, but the folder isnt in c:\documents and settings\All Users where it should be.

Right now the problem is a bit more serious, as i have just realised that without this folder being "there", Norton Antivirus will not be able to be updated, becuase my subscription information is in that folder...
How can this actually happen?
Jameen
Ok, another problem i discovered while trying to install updates from windows update...doesnt work if the all users folder "isnt there".
Have checked on knowledge base, but found nothing, have searched the net, still nothing...
Anyone got any ideas at all?
Cheers

You didn't say where the files are.
well basically, when i access the files, they are reported to be in the same place... C:\Documents and Settings\All Users, but when i actually browse to this location using explorer or any other method, you cannot actually see the folder "All Users"
Have tried Showing hidden files, no success, still doesnt show up.
Just before reading your message, I also tried creating a new "All Users" folder, but the system wouldnt allow this, because the file is still there.

Maybe system restore will fix this?

Have you unchecked "Hide protected opertating system files" as well as "Show hidden files and folders" in the Tools / View tab??
urrr.....oh look there it is!
lol never even seen that box before, cheers for that.
Now another problem, how do i get it to actually not be a hidden system folder?
Jameen
I'm not sure if its possible to change a property to as to whether its considered a protected operating system file, but if you right click the root of the folder and go to properties there is a tick box for whether you want it to be hidden or not.
It may be possible to do it in DOS with the atrib commans, after all all files have a system attribute flag, Explorer just seems to protect you from this.
Note: I haven't actually tryed this myself as it's a pain navigating in DOS with the long filenames eg/ c:\docume~1\..... (for c:\Documents and Settings)

After having a play with the same settings under win2k it seems that all you need to do is untick the hidden file property. However I have found a few folders where the tick box is both selected and greyed out, if this is the case (it shouldn't be) i'm not sure what to do.
If it's selected and grey, then it means some of the files within the directory (or subdirectory) are hidden and some are not, thats all. If you click it it will tahe the hidden flag off ALL of the files within the directory.

Ah, learn something new every day!
well that didnt work! lol

In what way did it not work? Were you not able to deselect it as hidden? Did the folder not stay hidden? Is the folder now no longer hidden but not detectable from the applications you mentioned?
Just now i actually unhid a couple of the folders within All Users, so my antivirus program now works. But there is one folder that will not let me untick it as read only, and is ticked and greyed out as hidden. The folder is DRM, and its got a couple of files to do with migration in it. Will deleting this file affect the system, or can i get rid of it so i can unhide the whole folder?
Cheers
Jameen
DRM is digital rights management. I guess the question is, do you have any licenses in there and can you afford to lose the data associated with it. I suspect you'd be better off leaving it there. If you've managed to unhide all the other folders I would imagine thats it fixed now.

Just tried moving the DRM folder out of All Users, but still could not unhide the All Users folder...Still confused ! lol
