Check this out for uber-weird.

Recently re-installed EVERYTHING. Had my copy of Acrobat 6 full in a zip file on my slave drive. Copied it onto primary, installed and deleted zip.

HOWEVER, when I click a link in outlook email, it not only open a copy of firefox as instructed, it opens up a winrar self extracting dialog box (winrar not installed, as far as I can tell the rar file itself is not on primary drive).

What on earth is that all about?

One time out of curiosity I allowed it to self extract rather than press cancel, and sure enough it deposited the rar filed contents unzipped on my desktop.

It's not a huge problem, just mildly annoying and quirky, but most of all mistifying.

There is always something with my systems.. :D

In outlook i am pretty sure you can set what browser to open and can enter comand to run, i.e "firefox.exe" and any switchs you want - check there to see if there is any wierdness in there. What is the name of the rar .exe file?

you also never actually said what the self-extractors contents were? something dodgy, or just a normal file that you've downloaded?

Yeah it's acrobat 6, I just located the zip, it's in my documents, deleted it.

Now when I click a link a dialog box comes up as follows:

"locate link browser"

In: "my documents"

And thus the only .exe in there was a self extracting file (acrobat).

I selected firefox.exe from program files, and now it works.

V. weird though, when I installed firefox it asked me if I wanted to make it my default browser - and that is what caused the weirdness. Probably an inbuilt quirk by microsoft to torment you for not choosing explorer. :D
