Playing Midis through a Synth

Hi

Ive got a synth rigged upto my pc through a midi cable
What i want to do is play midis through the synth
So when i press a key it plays a certain midi

Is there a program to do this?
Its baffled me totallly

Worth looking at Cakewalk Home Studio, this will direct MIDI to an external device, don't know about pressin a button to play a tune, but you can send the MIDI to the synth and press play on the computer.

It also lets you edit the music and the instruments etc, not the most powerful but quite easy to use.
