im in the process of putting a new rig together & have already bought a
120gb 7200 western digital 8mb caviar, a ASUS A7N8X deluxe motherboard,
amd 2500xp, 2x512 kingston 3200 ddr, a Aopen fx5900xt graphic card,
audigy soundcard, cdr writer, dvd writer & an aspire 550 watt PSU,XP pro sp1.
black Coolermaster praetorian case, aerogate 2 fan controller, aero 7 cpu heatsink.

i got the HDD a few months ago & was planning on partioning it to
40/80 & was going to add either a 120 or 160 HDD as a slave.
but since then, the sata HDD's have came on leaps & bounds,
plus theyre not much more exspensive than ordinary drives,

so i was wondering, as the asus mobo has 2 sata sockets, can i add a
sata HDD to run with the ide HDD ? i read somewhere else that you can
& the sata HDD has to be set as master but im just checking

the new rig will be used for playing the odd game, web browsing & downloading
but mostly for video editing & burning dvds.

my options are either to add another ide HDD, get a sata & set it to
master or flog the ide & go with 2 sata HDDs.

opinions sought

SATA don't have Master and Slave settings. They do, however, have a faster interface and as such you may (will) want to run Windows off of it anyway.

SATA are a lot faster than IDE if you ask me, but im sticking with ide for the time being since its fully supported

The setting for the SATA means nothing as the BIOS by default will try to boot from an IDE device unless the boot sequence is changed in the BIOS to tell the system to boot from the SATA controller first. I still boot my server from the IDE drives as [M]uuuuuuh has stated due to they are fully supported.
