I need to decide what cooler to get for my AMD 1.4 Gig Thunderbird, i am currently using a Akasa Silver Mountain, it is too loud and does not perform to required specs, i was thinking bout getting an Zalman Flower Cooler, they look sweet, but come with a hefty price tag!! or would it be easier to to just put some blow holes in my case and use a quieter fan on my Silver Mountain?

I'm using the Athlon 1.4GHz too...
I use one of those Tai-Sol fans, can't remember which one exactly!
Can't really tell how quiet it runs, because the PSU makes so much noise I can't hear it!!
I am using a Tai-Sol copper bottomed HSF with standard fan on a 1.2GHz Athlon overclocked to 1.32GHz. Kustom PCs do them for £18. The fan isn't excessively loud and the temps. are OK.
An alternative would be the Cooler Master HHC-001 copper "heat pipe" coolers - expensive though (over £40) but the fan runs at over 7,000rpm and has a bit of a whine. (Use one of those cables to cut the voltage to the fan and slow it down maybe?) Hope this helps
Tai-sol's are a bi*** to install, also they are not that good at cooling, i was thinking about getting a zalman cooler, coz they look sweet and also they are supposedly quiet!!
I currently sleep with earplugs in!! because my silver mountain's delta 60mm kick out 46dba
My CPU temp reaches 50degrees this is not acceptable in my case seeming as i want to be able to play CS for hours without having to take my case side off and come out of the game to let the cpu cool down!
Any body got a Zalman flower coller and an AMD 1.4gig that could tell me there idle and load CPU temps pls? :)
Hello again,
I have a Zalman and a 1.3ghz TBird Athlon. Only problem is, I haven't installed it yet.!
Sorry.
50 degrees isn't tooo bad. As long as it doesn't get much higher than that. How many case fans do you have?
Hi,
I have one 80mm case fan extracting air, also a pci slot cooler which is also extracting air!

I have a Zalman Flower on an XP 1800+ after playing 4 or 5 hours of Quake UT, that uses 100% load, the max temp ive seen my CPU is 42C
It sits at 35C idle. I used to use the cooler on a 1.4 Athlon T-Bird before I upgraded, and got much the same temps. And its lovely and quiet can hardly hear the fan, as it uses a 92mm fan. I love it and would recomend it to anyone
Thanks wcavanagh
I think i will be ordering one of these babies soon, have too see if it will fit in my case though first coz of the psu positioning above the top of the mobo!!

I haven't really had any problems with the TaiSol.
If you use a PSU with an intake fan on the bottom, it pulls cold air over the CPU area, that helps to cool things down a little!
Usually when I play games the only problem I have is the batteries on the mouse running out just when I'm at a tricky bit! :(
could it be that the room you have your rig in is too hot??
Put the central heating down to about 18C (thats not too cold) and see if that helps :) It makes a fair difference with mine.
Oh and change the fan to a wee coolermaster or something similar (as long as it's a decent brand) it wont make much difference to your temps but you will be rid of the DELTA RACKET :)
