Hey, I've had this problem on a permant basis for aprox. 8 months now, I've gone through a countless number of hours trying to get the problem fixed, but have never done so ... i think i've even posted it on here before but never reached the solution , So i'm hoping (fingers crossed!) to get to the bottom of it.

Basically ever since I setup a server computer in my dad's study the whole network (consisting of 4 PC's on XP Home) is unable to access ebay.co.uk & hotmail.com. Nobody use's hotmail.com, but both me and my dad used to use ebay a lot, and for sometime now we havent be able too. There is a few other problems that are occuring such as not being able to send a certain amount of information across the internet (e.g a huge message on here, a file through email or uploading a document to an external website)

I'm pretty sure it's something to do with the ICS on the server, but i cant figure it out!

Hope i can finally get this fixed,
Steven.

Edit: Just read post again .. your using ICS.

What provider are you using? Maybe try differnet DNS servers? Do you get any error messages?

1) What network setup do you have? (Firewall / routers / switches / wireless etc.)

2) Can you access these sites on the server?

cheers for the replies :) full details are as follows:

Provider : NTL , 56k Dial-Up
Hub : Netgear EN104TP (4-Port)
Network : 4 Computers (1 Laptop, 3 Desktop) all on Windows XP Home Edition
Non-Wireless, All using RJ45 straight through cabling
No Firewall's except for the XP based one (holding out for Norton 2005)

Can you access these sites on the server?
nope

Maybe try differnet DNS servers?
Didn't think I needed to do this as i'm not on broadband, Should I ?

Do you get any error messages?
No error message's unfortunatly, in IE "page cannot be displayed" immediatly appears, In FireFox (which is on 2 of the computers) "this document contains no data" immediatly appears

Thanks Again, Steven.

just a quick question....

what do you get if you go to this address??

http://66.135.192.41/

i get ebay.com which loads up perfectly :)

...problem is when i sign in "this page contain's no data" appears

if i type in "http://www.ebay.co.uk" it will act different for some reason , instead of the page loading up like the american version , the page wont load up at all and "this page contains no data" appears

so basically i can access ebay.com briefly , but can't access ebay.co.uk at all
...weird huh

it's sounding like a DNS problem...
check on google for other DNS server that NTL uses! most ISP's have 3 or 4 other DNS ip's you can use...

thanks [GPO]Solitaire :) , i've found the following alternatives :

cache1-edin.server.ntli.net
cache3-edin.server.ntli.net

i'm using "cache1-edin.server.ntli.net" right now (according to nthellworld.co.uk)

would you mind explaining how to change my DNS Server?

Hi there mate

I have exactly the same setup as you, one server running xp pro and two desktops running xp pro

I used to have problems with stuff like this, i found that it was the xp 'network' firewall. Okay, try looking in the gateway internet thingy and disable the firewall.

If it isnt enabled then possibly because you have no firewall, the server has a virus, personaly i use the xp firewall on the server and have no problems whatsoever.

Add me to msn if ya like cheazypeaz@Dsl.pipex.com you can compare your settings with mine

Hope this helps.

cheers cheasypeaz :)

i've tried disabling it / changing settings / enabling it but still no change
i'm going try a different DNS Server , and if that doesnt work i'll add you to my msn :)

To change the DNS servers a specific computer uses, you need to goto the network and dial up connections, then goto the properties of the NIC on that computer, and goto the Internet Protocol TCP/IP settings and click propeties again, then a new window will appear which should display edit boxes which allow you to enter IP addresses and also DNS server addresses, if you are using ICS they will currently be set to Obtain an IP address automatically. On the check box for DNS servers select use the following DNS servers instead and manually enter the IP addresses i gave you.

thanks,

i did a that , changing both internet connection & network connection but still no luck :(

i could possibly have a virus on the server machine as when i highlighted 'My Ebay' on the server computer it will show up that it's going to something like "1116 1174 1153 alt.mediaplex"

time to add cheaz i think!

Have you ran anti-virus software and something like adaware on the ICS machine?

Hi smclintock,

I have exactly the same problem! And I cannot find where it is!
I'm behind a dlink 604 with 3 WinXP pro boxes and a few days ago, the problem
started! I can access ebay but not msn. I get a lot of "This page contains no data" (with Firefox) and I cannot send an email with large attachements!

I don't have the ICF enabled...

If you did find out what it was, pleeeeas tell me :)

Cheers!
LoPo
