Sounds like spyware to me, try downloading either adaware (http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/) or spybot (http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html).

Also, installing windows updates will help prevent getting spyware in the first place - check your antivirus definitions while you're going too.

And before somebody else suggests it... give firefox (http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/) a try - it's much better than IE and gets a lot less spyware.

I take it you use IE, if so you've probably pickup some sort of browser hijacker. Download and run Spybot Search & Destroy, if that doesn't fix it try Hijack This, be careful with that though as you can remove things from the registry that should be there ;)

Spybot (http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html)

Hijack This (http://www.majorgeeks.com/download3155.html)

Doh! a bit late :D

Stupid question, but you have done a full scan with it (updated too)? Also get adaware. This is probably a browser hijacker.

I'll suggest giving SpySweeper (http://www.webroot.com/wb/products/spysweeper/index.php) a go. It's the one I use personally (in conjunction wi' Ad-Aware Pro (http://www.lavasoft.de/)).

If/when ye get rid o' the pesky thing... I'd also suggest using a program like Browser Hijack Blaster (http://www.wilderssecurity.com/bhblaster.html) or Start Page Guard (http://www.pjwalczak.com/spguard/index.php) - which both protect your Homepage from being changed. SpySweeper has this feature built-in btw!

And finally... use a good pop-up blocker too... e.g. Pop-up Nuker (http://www.popup-nuker.com/), StopZilla (http://www.stopzilla.com/site/default.asp?AID=10004&S=1&type=&topic=&source=&SID=606928931-200418-6-14-28-35&AAID=&dre=) or Pop-up Cop (www.popupcop.com/) ;)

Does the message pop-up in a box entitled "Windows Messenger"? I had a similar problem recently.
