View Full Version : Getting Hot?
Hello everybody, I'm a newbie so bare with me if I come across stupid, or even lamish god forbid.
What it is I've just finished building my PC:
Ti4600 GForce 4
PIV 2.2BGhz
ABIT BD7 II
Thermal Take HS & Fan + Arctic Silver
Two IBM 120GB Drives
1GB of RAM
Two Thermal Take Fans (sucking air in) at the front of the case (set to High Speed) from the Lian Li settings behind the pannel.
Four Thermal Take Fans (blowing air out) at the back of the case.
Enermax PSU upside down (due to Lian Li case having a solid shelve for the PSU to sit in)
so I got 1 fan faceing upwords inside.
And yet with all that cooling, when sat idleing in the bios I get:
CPU :53DegsC
System :38DegsC
I set the CPU to alarm when it reaches 60DegsC, and it went of whilst installing windows, so I let it finish and turned it off.
Anyone got any ideas for it getting hot?
Oh and BTW all the cables are sat behind the metal plating where the motherboard goes on, so I know there are no air restrictions.
Cheers sTe

How much Arctic Silver did you put on? Are you sure teh HS is seated correctly?
And what's the room temperature? Could always be a warm room...
Arctic Silver, not a lot ... just enough to coat the metal thang on the CPU ... can too much be bad? And how do you know if you got too much on?
My other system that I used to have in here used to never get above 40Degs.

The BD7 II comes with the heatsink holder supplied loose. You fit it by pushing the grey pins into the holes but in my BD7 II the top of the pins when pushed in appear to sit proud of the surround by a ba' hair. This might lead to the contact being less than perfect (though still pretty good contact) and lead to higher temps. than expected - 'cos I get higher temps. than expected on mine. I've said this before and no one has said I'm talking mince but then - no one has said I'm right ;)
I'll take a closer look tomorrow ... Just thought I would give you all an update ... your gonna love this. I took my HS & fan off to see how thick the compound is ... looked, could see the writing on the CPU so put the HS & fan back on. Now when I try and boot up, everything spins up (fans) and all I get now are beeps, and a black screen. The beeps last ~3-4 seconds, and dont stop. Just wondering if anyone had any ideas as to what to do. Ive taken all my cards out, all the RAM out, all data cables + power. I've put power and RAM in, but still get the same error ... ive moved the RAM around, and I still get the same. Ive just about done everything I can think off. Any ideas? Someone suggested the CPU is shagged :/
put only the cpu, memory and video card in and then let us know exactly what the beeps are like - u get different beeps for different errors u c
Yeah tried all that, tried no CPU RAM or CARDS, and I still get the same ... beeps that last 3-4 seconds, and it goes on forever, all the beeps last the same and are the same tone. Ive tried it with just CPU in, Just RAM in, both in ... still the same response. Somone suggested the temp monitoring thing on the motherboard maybe touching the chip ... so thats something for me to test.
Any other ideas?

Well, I've removed the CPU had a look underneath ... nothing looks out of the ordinary. Why cant POSTs actually report whats failin, some kind of on board RAM/mini CPU ... thats all thats needed.
/Me sits and waits for some feedback.

i know u say that the "beeps that last 3-4 seconds" but whats the pattern of the beeps
like long-short-short
or something like that?
and and btw
ive got the same motherboard and sounds like the same processor
mine runs about 39-41 degrees idle (in windows) for the CPU
bit less for the system

Ooh bugger thats the same as what mine was doing and i found it to be a nackered cpu where the heatsink didnt mount correctly?? Hope thats not whats happened with yours.
My sig says it all, if it is the CPU. :(
The beeps sound exactly the same tone ... lasting 3-4 seconds. So it will beep lasting 3-4 seconds, then their will be 3-4 seconds of silence, then another beep lasting 3-4 second, then blank again, etc.

If anyone would try something for me, if you remove the RAM, what sound do you get ... someone suggested its either RAM or CPU probs. I know when you remove the CPU you get about 1 second power up, then system shuts down.

iam not 100% sure but ive got a feeling that a long repetative beep is memory problem
actually i jsut checked with a mate with the same mob
he recently ha memory problems and thats the error he got

Try using some different memory stick in it then, or if you are using two banks at the minute swap them around.
Well good news and bad ... I thought it was the CPU that broken, from a webby that lists all beeps from POST, it said CPU problems. I had two banks of memory, swapped them over. Well, today I thought Ill try one stick in each bank ... first one no differnce, stuck second in ... 1 beep ... YAY ... working puter ... looks like one of my corsair was at fault.
Memory swapping usually sorts out most non booting computers. :)

Continous beeping can also be video card not inserted fully.
we all remember my worrying spam in irc about my vid card which managed to pop out of the agp slot without me knowing rofl
