I've seen it mentioned before here, but does anyone know how good the picture quality of the 1600SW is compared with, say, a 15" laptop screen (Dell, Toshiba etc.) On these last two for instance, when watching a movie like the Matrix, the artifacts and pixellation in the dark parts of the picture are quite obvious - they spoil it. Does the 1600SW do any better.

From everything I have heard, the 1600SW is an amazing panel! I havent heard anyone talk about the point you make but when you consider who is making them and their primary purpose; heavy graphics work, you would think they should be able to handle it!

Check out the products page for more info - http://www.sgi.com/flatpanel/

Thanks for that. The next problem to raise its head is getting a graphics card which will run 1600 x 1024. The web site doesn't mention a lot of GeForce cards and the onkly suggestion is the Matrox G400. I have a G450 dual head and I can only hope that it would manage the resolution because there are lots of different resolutions listed but not 1600x1024
Perhaps the Flat Panel comes with an inf file or something like that.

as far as i remember the 1600sw has a dvi interface so that has to be considered first. SG shipped this panel with the no9 rev IV graphics card but i think you can use the g-450 okay, geforce cards can do 1600 x 900 and 1600x 1200 as listed resolutions but as for 1600 x 1024 i'll look into that one.

With the matrox G400 1600 x 1024 is available, in order to get this res you must fiddle about with the MONITOR you choose then adjust as necessary. :)

checked last night and my G3 supports that res, so presumably g2's do to although i can't remember.

I have an old No9 graphics card if u need it...32 meg..etc

I think it has a lot to do with the monitor drivers you have installed. I have a GF card and installed the new detonator drivers and i had tonnes of WEIRD!!!! Rez's

I changed my monitor from a generic 1 to PT813 and now i only get standar resolutions
