OK, how about cool hardware that you would love but just can't afford, people? Why not post the name of the hardware with an image so we can all ogle. Here's a few to start you off:

1) SGI 18" LCD display in black:
http://www.oxfordpc.com/components/monitor/sgi.jpg

OR

Pioneer 50" Plasma High Definition Monitor
http://www.3drage.com/guides/dreamsystem/plasma.jpg

2) An SCSI RAID 5 array, controlled by an Adaptec DPT Millenium Fibre Channel card with 256mb cache RAM!
http://graphics.adaptec.com/3755f.jpg
with, say 8 180gig Seagate drives (http://www.seagate.com/cda/products/discsales/marketing/detail/0,1121,331,00.html) http://www.seagate.com/products/images/prodshots/barracuda_lg.gif

3) Nice little gigabit ethernet (http://www.netgear.com/categories.asp?xrp=3&yrp=9) switch + cards for the old home network, anybody? :-)
http://www.netgear.com/images/thumbnails/fs510t.jpg

4) 8-way PIII Xeons with 1mb cache apeice?

5) Supermicro 850 case (to look the part)
http://www.3drage.com/guides/dreamsystem/SUPER8000.jpg

6) 1.5 gig RAM?

7) Diamond Multimedia FireGL3 video card with 128 Mb DDR SGRAM
http://www.3drage.com/guides/dreamsystem/sm2.jpg

So, can anyone out-extreme me with cool hardware???

Right I formally accept your challenge...

Read this thread...

LETS GO INSANE! (http://www.kustom.co.uk/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=12&t=000004)

Changed my mind about the disks in the server, 30 Seagate Cheetah 73LPs would be better, ;)! Could do with a better SCSI controller though.

pah! my system gives you more processing power, a larger display, more RAM, faster disk-access times, 256mb disk cache RAM (plus the cache RAM on each disk itself), 10x the storage space of yours, support for multi-processor apps, and way superior graphics! If you *really* want me to kick your machine's ass, I'll also throw into my setup:

1) Twin Power 850 ATX PSUs - 850w hotswappable apiece
http://www.3drage.com/guides/dreamsystem/dual.jpg

2) A BiTMicro 32GB solid state flashRAM disk (http://www.bitmicro.com/edisk_fc235.html)for boot/system drive (has 256mb cache RAM too with access time in nanoseconds!)
http://www.bitmicro.com/edisk.jpg

3) a 75,000 pound MegaCache-4000 device that decreases the access time on my SCSI array to just 0.05ms compared to your average 5ms. It also provides 12.88GB of caching capacity ON TOP OF the 256mb on the RAID card, and ON TOP OF the 2mb/disk (16mb total) of the drives themselves.

My machine powders yours into the dirt, stomps up and down on its head and spits on its remains. AND I've provided pics for all the nice hardware and you haven't! Let's see some pics!

:p

This is a challenge that will have to wait until I can take the time to really rip apart your system.

In the meantime let me KILL your graphics, can you say 16 VSA-100 chips and 1GB of memory?!? QUANTUM 3D (http://www.quantum3d.com).

OK, your video card ****es on mine (but you're original one didn't) - maybe we should combine best of your boxen with the best of mine? :-)

JADS

:D

My original one would have excellent performance in all games, you would have to hack the drivers for this board unless it supports Direct X, :)!

Ok lets combine. I think a Athlon supercooled would be a better choice for most apps.

pioneer 50" plasma , we can order em in - price is ridiculous!
2. OUCH that is a fast scsi card
3. neat
4. 8 xeons? sounds like dead_ones computer :)
5. supermirco case - get a ying yang, cos its black :)
6. no problem

I won`t even try with your second list of stuff. but pls, don`t any1 bother putting these in the product suggestions section, you`ll just upset me. :)

That 850 Watt PSU may look nice, but it only generates 400 odd continuously. A 550 Watt enermax would be better. Or 8 of them.

James</STRONG>

No PSU will run at its full rated power continuously - every PSU gives its peak power rather than continuous rated - 850w peak is better than 550w peak if you ask me.

Dan

The Enermax is a better PSU. It delivers a constant 550Watts compared to 460Watts of that particular PSU. Considering the Enermax delivers 650peak, 200 less than that one and has a higher average output means that it is most probably a better PSU.

Lian Li will build you a case to your specifications. How about getting them to build the ultimate aluminimum server cube?

Lian Li (http://www.lian-li.com/english/p9.htm)

They will I think make a case to your specification if you give them the plans, :)!

If there were enough PCI slots you could have

1 AGP + 1 PCI Quantum3D Aalchemy
2 PCI Quantum 3D Aalchemy
1 PCI Geforce 2MX Twin View

4 PCI slots gone, but you could attach 4 monitors...

ooh, are there many pci geforce's about?
but it can't be asus - due to their cheating drivers...

Elsa does a twin view PCI card.

Craig

excellent, it doesn't have to be twin output, just one, but it must be pci, OR a dual output and agp, preferably good cards, but again, must NOT be asus

JADS

from DABS, list of PCI gfx cards

DABS PCI (http://www.dabs.com/products/prod-search.asp?action=search&refp=PCI&mid=-1&tid=700&ob=manufacturer&obd=asc&stab=ref&p=&lp=&up=&mc=&sc=)

I really don`t understand the absolute hate towards asus for the `feature` in their new drivers... I think you`re forgetting that they`re damn fine cards, and if you don`t like the feature , DON`T SWITCH IT ON !!!

It`s not a reason to boycott their cards, and convince everyone they suck.

JADS
29-05-2001, 10:45
Haven't Asus also had problems with quality control and support?

well, yes it is as anything which gives anyone an unfair advantage when playing against others is not acceptable, i'm not sure if you play cs online a lot but the amount of times people have an unfair advantage is crazy. ANY company which gives this should be boycotted, whether they make good things or not, the fact is that they are scum for doing it. I know for sure that myself will not be buying an asus product, as will alot of people, as it's the only way to get accross the point that cheating is bad when online.
