I have a PC in mind (been putting it together for months on paper), but its beyond scope, :) it requires custom components to be made as well...

TAG Mclaren/Lexicon audio system
61" plasma (NEC)
dual 22" IBM T22 monitors
2GB RDRAM
i850 chipset, cooled
P4 Northwood, cooled to -60 or below and driven over 3GHz. Running on 133MHz FSB
SB Live! Audigy Platinum Ex PCI Soundcard
Yamaha DS2416 PCI Soundcard
Custom wireless keyboard and mouse, equipped with blue LEDs. Resolution on optical mouse boosted to 1000dpi plus... I'm guessing the resolution is limited by cost rather than technical reasons. 125Hz. Made out of magnesium, ms mouse based on Wireless Intellimouse Explorer would be good.
Custom coolermaster made desk with titanium chassis and carbon fibre top, holds components. Window on top/sides. plug sockets (power/connect) next to component places.
Cold cathode lighting throughout. Blue LEDs throughout. Lit 120mm fan intakes/outtakes throughout.
4 x Enermax EG651P-VE FMA Switch PSU
Custom Geforce 3 Ti500 gfx module. 9 chipsets, 128MB (375Mhz DDR) memory each, 4 plugged into each T22 and 1 for Plasma. Chipsets cooled and taken 350MHz
Digital TV card plugged into Plasma display
dual 15 way RAID 5, Seagate 15K RPM 36GB HDDs.
custom 2.4x DVD+RW drive and 40x CD-RW drive, featuring components from Meridian's 800 line of DVD/CD players to improve playback quality.
dual 10" touchscreen LCD panels in desk, connected via USB to main board. display system info, system control, graphics, etc...
Rounded cables throughout.
Func Industries sUrface 1030 MousePad
Iomega Peerless drive with Firewire interface. 10 20GB discs supplied
6 way USB2 and Firewire hubs built in
16 port GBit ethernet switch built in
Gigabit ethernet card
silicon etch graphic on main window
ROM backup unit
Water cooling installed
Cestron remote controlled

:D

umm probably missed some stuff!

see... this is what i am talking about ! :D :D

believe it or not.... i have talked with cray about producing the 'Xtreme Computer'... and after much deliberating... i wasn't happy with what they were offering :D.... no seriously they said and i quote, "we at cray do not believe their isn't a big enough demand for this product"... but what do they know!!

jstormont.... get in touch with me if you'd be interested in running the xtreme computer on the site @ luke@mceonline.co.uk .... and mceonline aint the site you'd be working on :D... you've got some good ideas....

thanks...

I'm having probs getting companies to respond, there are few channels to get to the actual people in the company and not the mindless automotons who send out mindless email messages!

Lots of interesting stuff though to come, it will well and truly blow everyone away, :)

Does
- Dual 24" LCD monitors
- Custom case designed by Soldam
- Custom super cooled Geforce4 Ti4600 made by Gainward
- Dual 4GHz Xeons, 150-200MHz FSB

sound good to anyone?

can i beta test it?

??? what all are the 550w psu's for????

iggy
04-04-2002, 23:17
also, the point in 9? geforce 4s.

infodata
05-04-2002, 22:16
sorry m8, beta testing strictly left to employee's...

and prospective clients :)

as for the 9 GF4's, 4 each are needed for the two 22" IBM monitors, and just the one for the 50" plasma :D

i think if you read through the specifications list you'll see that you can answer the 5 psu's question yourself ;)

Not sure about chipset, i860 looks promising, 2-4GB of memory would be pretty potent... However it is RDRAM and the current max clock hovers between 133-150MHz, I would prefer to run at 200MHz FSB if possible (due to HQ DDR available), 800MHz QDR bus for the P4 would make it really go. However there are no dual DDR Xeon motherboards available... discounting E7500 due to its server nature.

Why no Athlon? Simple it doesn't O/C that high, I'll be looking at the new 0.13 core to see where that goes, but P4 is currently more tempting. How about Clawhammer? that is a long way off, I will reevaluate as new tech becomes available...

The 9 Geforce 4s have been discounted, the T221 screen has a v slow pixel refresh rate and it would be a technical nightmare trying to get 9 working on 1 board, with 4 powering a different quadrant each of one screen. Changed the two secondary monitors to 24" Samsung 240T monitors. Reducing the chip count to 3, which should be "possible" to make working if cost isn't an issue.

The PSUs are there to provide power to the internal components... including the hefty cooling, 2 CPUs, 3 GPUs & Northbridge.

As for usage... well the aim is to provide a very fluid and graphical shell on top of a Windows core, based (possibly) on litestep... the experience will be one of sheer raw power, not having to wait for anything, to provide currently available apps that require processing power... For example, using Power VCR II 3.0 Deluxe to record Super HQ MPEG 2 and have either Flask or VD converting that stream to DIVX 5 on the fly using maximum quality settings... to allow you to create a vast multimedia library quickly and easily.

Well, if there are guys putting up 25.000£+ on a stereo sound system or 100.000£+ for a top of the line projector for their home-cinema systems. I´ll guess there is a market for som insanely hich.spec PCs.

Hi!

Isn´t the G4s very difficult to sync the way you require?

I think the new ATI-chips would more easily accomplish what you´re looking for. They are built to operate together from the beginning.

Don´t know if the Radeon 8500 has the feature I´m talking about but I know its successor has

Same people who will buy one of these

Vertu (http://www.vertu.com)

Can you say £20-25,000?

JADS
21-04-2002, 00:22
I'm aware of the probs with putting more than 1 Geforce chip on a board (notice no dual chipset Quadro?), but whether this was due to not being able to do it at a certain price point or a technical impossibility I am not sure.

Radeon 8500 is too slow! although it does have other qualities... mind you R300 will compete directly with NV30. NV30 is the first to use 3dfx technology, which is interesting as 3dfx specialised in putting more than 1 graphics chip on a board. Take a look at www.quantum3d.com, (http://www.quantum3d.com), I bet their itching to take delivery of a new chipset for their high end boards!

Well if you arn´t sure if putting more than one GF4 on the same card is possible, why are you basing your spec on it?

I thought the system should be able to be put together tomorrow, if anyone should cough up the money.

the ATI chips are inherently resigned to fit 2 on a card, and the SLI cards, maybbe a custom motherboard with 2 AGP slots is what you need! the ability to add more than one Radeon to the card is a feature retained from the Rage Fury MAXX, if you remember that :)

JADS
21-04-2002, 22:54
1. Spec is provisional subject to R&D.
2. R&D will take a little while, :)
3. You can't have dual AGP slots!

If you just had standard components off the shelf it could be built tomorrow, but it wouldn't be anything special.

Havent laughed so hard in ages.....

Ok back to Earth and a system that exists.

How about some storage to add to that system.

Sun StorEdge 9960 System.
20.9 TB storage over 288 x 73Gb 10k dual ported fibre channel drives.
22Gb cache ram
etc.

The software license to control it costs $88,000.

Unit cost as spec'd (hold your breath now)

$2,091,590.00

There are better systems but we don't wnat to over do it now (*grin*).

Now to think up the PC spec, backup solutions and network systems.

Cheers

Rims.

All that hardware, and you don't even have the decency to run UNIX on it...

FWIW, my flatmate is actually in the middle of building his own "extreme" system, although I'm not sure about the pricing of most components.

Tyan i7505 motherboard
Dual 2.5 GHz Intel Xeons
512 MB ECC registered RAM
Matrox Parhelia 512
U160 Seagate 15K Cheetah hanging off onboard SCSI (to be replaced by a U320 drive once they become affordable)
3ware 8-port IDE RAID card holding (ATM) one RAID 1 array of 2 80 GB Seagate Barracuda IV's, with room for three more IDE RAID 1 arrays
SoundBlaster Audigy eX (he fell in love with mine :))
Dual 19" Trinitrons (plus he's saving up for an LCD to use as his third screen)
Sitting inside a junky old server case at the moment
Gonna be running Debian or Slackware

Gonna be a workstation to die for :)
