View Full Version : SV24 Shuttle slag?!
I love the Shuttle, I like really BIG cases or really small ones. But... even at the new reduced price of £205 it is only suitable for people who want the nice little case to the exclusion of all other considerations.
Example (from Kustom's own price list:
ATX H-01 'Purple button' micro case
Asus CUSI-M mATX mobo with onboard sound
Asus GeForce2 mx 400 with 32Mb
Unex PCI 100Mb NIC
This approximately duplicates the functionality of the Shuttle at a total cost of £197 and, in performance terms (as well as expandibility), cuffs the ass off it.
So let's be serious.
This was meant as a tongue in cheek but it actually sounds like serious criticism - thing is, I would much rather have the Shuttle than the kit I've listed above. Proof that human beings are rationalising creatures, not rational ones!

But the Purple Buttox case is Huge compared to the Shuttle!!!
the shuttle can be hidden away in a corner and nobody would notice it there... and it has everything u need in a small box

but if its just going to sit hidden away in a corner then no one will really see it so surely there is a similar size case thats cheaper that doesnt look so nice
i tihnk if you were buying that case then its for the looks as well as the size
and the looks probably add a bit to it
i could be totally wrong but hey thats life
i didn't buy mine primarily for the looks... it was mostly for the size... and it fitted for the project i was wanting to do

I would feel guilty about sticking something so neat looking in a cupboard.. where we see it as being ideal is sitting next to a home mini hi-fi system...
I nearly bought the Shuttle from G & T but I ended up buying a CM 110 when I realised I still had all the other components to buy so the 110 was a cheaper Chrissie pressie to me.
The point is, it looks tremendous and its so small! and... er.. that's it. You can get a big hard drive in it and a fair amount of RAM but say you want to use it as a DVD player but with much more flexibility. You can't get a decent non frame dropping speed AND 5.1 sound at the same time 'cos there's only 1 slot. A RealMagic Hollywood Plus card has a coaxial socket so you could get 5.1 sound with Creative DT3500s for example. But with the built in VGA, would the picture be up to much?
If you go the good graphics card route, you can't get your 5.1 sound.
Speed for games? Dai, you have an mx Geforce2 in your Shuttle. Could you get an acceptable speed from it if, say, you were running Colin McRae 2 with maximum graphics detail levels?
In other words there doesn't appear to be a real killer use for it. Again, don't get me wrong. If I ever have £200 spare and already have some spare components, I'll be buying one :D :D

Who's Colon McRab when he's about?
Quake3TA sings along, DVD's play beautifully, and I've never had more than 2 speakers in anything (tv, hi-fi, or PC).
I didn't buy it to be a VCR !!!
The point is it's small and cheap, yes cheap,
amongst other things I wanted to have a system to take to work on quiet winter nights shifts to keep me awake.
I carry the SV24 in a small bag, and plug works 19" CRT's, KeyB and rodent.
I play Q3, AvP2 etc, and watch DVD and DivX films with headphones on. To buy a Laptop with equivalent power would mean spending maybe over 2000 pounds to get the gfx and RAM. :o
I am going away on an 8 month course soon, and need more mobility, can't keep having the SV24 chucked in and out of aircraft holds every weekend, so I'll be buying a Laptop, but I'm not paying >1200 pounds, so it'll be for www, films and some older games.
Anyone want to buy my SV24 in June ?????
I may keep it to have in my daughters playroom though????
Each to his own boyo,
cheers
Dai
OK, OK, I'm convinced.
Give me first refusal on your Shuttle in June, OK?
shouldn't you be like helping planes not crash rather than watching films or playing games, or am i missing something? :)

:D
If 2 aeroplanes arrive at the aerodrome, one at midnight and one at 3-45am, don't you think that it would be a good idea if I was awake to greet them???????
With nothing to do, I'd be asleep in minutes, wouldn't you?
At least I dont plug the SV24 into the PPI !!!
Dai
PS PPI = Radar screen/scope whatever you wanna call it :D
i can only have 1 response
touché
I bought one as a small server for the home network, it's only downside so far is the noise. Other than that it's great with a wireless kb and mouse -- the built in firewire is a plus for video edits.

Plan Position Indicator innit?

You're correct about PPI !!! :D :D
Hi Check6 (any ref. to looking behind U?)
The stock fan on the heatsink is VERY loud, the stock exhaust fan is also LOUD and fast. These fan speeds are only really necessary when doing intensive processing, ie. games and number crunching etc.
I've swapped the CPU fan for a quieter one and restricted their speeds using 47 ohm resistors this cuts the RPM from 5400 to 3600 on CPU, and 4500 to 4000 on the exhaust.
So instead of high speed wind its a breeze, a single DPDT switch swaps the 12v back on for when playing games etc.
I also considered modding a slot exhaust fan and putting it in my empty 3½ bay, but that may be no good because it'll stop the airflow near the rear of the case.
The biggest problem with the setup I think is that the PSU exhausts into the case !!!
I'm going to cut a hole in the side of the case soon and put a grill in, the duct the ½ inch or so from PSU to case wall, I'm sure that his will bring internall temps down by 10c. (Have you felt the left side of the case after games etc?)
Anyone any other ideas to reduce noise and temps ???????
Cheers

Yes it's a ref to the 6 o'clock position, my usual online games name.
I've not loaded any serious games on it yet as I'm rebuilding my main PC but a quick try out the other night of Tribes2 had a bloody hot left side. I'll take it apart when the other beast is rebuilt and do the fans.
Of use may be that Creative have just announced a USB sound system calledextigy (http://www.soundblaster.com/products/extigy/) no price or availability yet but it solves the one PCI slot problem neatly.
