to Gordy / Big Adam,

you guys are the good experts... is there any problem with disabling the onboard VGA on this SS51s, or have u heard of any??? cos, (mainly US ppl) people have had problems using PCI graphics cards in the SS40/SS50... don't want to shell out for the SS51 and a GF4 monster card and find incompatibility...

if not, then this is a new breakthrough - the potential for this is great... as well as the usual entertainment box, this is can be a destop killer...

my ss50 is already a desktop replacement (aside from gaming) though its has 3 firewire devcies (2 HDDs, 1 DVDrw)

LOL. Ain't no way I'm an expert, let alone a 'good' one, but I'll accept the complement!!! :D

Erm, well from what I've read, which may be as much as you have, yes some people did have problems with installing PCI graphics cards in the current/older Shuttles but this was mainly due to having to follow a precise disable/shutdown/install/re-boot/etc etc sequence which was easy to get wrong.

I had a cheapo PCI VGA card in my SV24 for a while and there were no problems.

From the reviews, there has been no comments so far of problems with AGP VGA installation. The ViaHardware reviewer shoved a Ti4600 in there and the detection/disabling issue didn't raise much comment!

One thing I would highlight which is reflected in the VH review is that Shuttle have made big strides forward with noise issues to both the PSU and heat-piped CPU. This makes for a great (although somewhat OTT) desktop replacement or entertainment centre. However, stick a huge graphics card in there (with the cooling fan pressed right up against the case wall BTW) and all that noise control is in vain.

I agree, these machines are now a great portable LAN box but they are not the perfect LAN/DVD/MP3 machine.

If all you crave is out and out performance in a small package (and a healthy dose of USB and firewire ports) the SS51 is for you. If you want very respectable on-board graphics performance together with reduced noise, wait for the SN40.

Not seen any reports of trouble disabling the onboard video. And never experienced any probs with it on the Sv24 I've built for a mate :)

Correct, simply place your AGP card in the AGP slot and the BIOS automatically disables the on board VGA, no need to run around in the BIOS like a headless chicken.

agreed, i had no problems what so ever getting my PCI ATI card up and running in my SV24. I'm tempted to upgrade simply because of AGP but so far it's not worth it, The TV out on the ATI is probably the best i've seen so far.
