Anyone have any trials with wireless?

Ive a mate who lives acorss the road and weve considered getting wireless LAN.

1. Is it fast enough?
2. Whats currently the best wireless under £200?
3. Ive considered the belkin one (100 metre range) anyone know of it?

Both XP pro users...

Kustom and dead_one have been using a Wireless connection for quite some time now over a busy road and its been fine from what I've heard. I have a Belkin Access point, usb adaptor and pcmcia card, I have to say I'm not too impressed by the range on it, but I'm not complaining cause I got it all for £0  . I am however in my new house planning to network a pc to the rest of the lan at the opposite floor and end of a house using the belkin equipment so I'll see how that goes.

Rad!
The connection should be fine but I wouldnt expect to get a connection speed faster that like 5Mbit as it will be some distance and also two (atleast) walls for the signal to travel through.

what you might want to try is to put an external antenna on the wireless cards (most cards will allow you to do this)

Also if you have a clear line of sight to your mates place then you might want to think about getting a directional antenna and an amplifier what you need to think about then is that 802.11b (the wireless LAN technology) operates at 2.4 GHz not all amps will handle that frequency....

all this ofcourse will add to the cost of the setup....

Hope this helps a bit...
Let us know how you get along
