i found this on another forum i use, thought i would post it here

its about a Danish Lan Party that went horribly wrong

---------------
A lanparty in the city Esbjerg (Connect #12) have been busted by the bailiff and an organization called AntiPiratGruppen (AntiPiracyGroup (APG)). APG gathered evidence at the party and thereafter closed it down as well as telling the participants that they could expect a letter, with charge for piracy, in their mailbox within the next few weeks.
Moreover the organizers have been charged for providing a network that has been used for illegal data transfer. The case is still developing and it is at the moment very hard to say how other Danish organizers will react upon this. But we have had several comments from organizers that say, that if the organizers from Connect #12 are sentenced to pay a large indemnity, they will not organize any more parties.

This situation is very problematic because if the organizers can be sentenced for providing a network there will not be many that would be willing to organize parties and take the risk. This makes the future for lanparties in here in Denmark very uncertain.

At the moment APG have send out a letter to the organizers telling them what to do, if they do not want to end up in the same situation as the people from Connect #12.

A few very important points form this letter are: - organizers should keep lists of participants name, address and IP during the net.
- organizers should keep track of all activity on the network to pick up illegal data.
- organizers should demand that participants sign a contract saying that they will not bring to or copy illegal data at the net.

The before mentioned letters that participants should expect have not yet been send out, but will soon. But information on about the letters content have been released.. The letter should be a document where the participants willingly should fill in how much illegal data they have gethered at the party. And the indemnity will then be calculated from this document, if the info given by the participant match the evidence APG have gathered at the party. If not the participants will be sued for piracy. AGP says that this approach is the best for everybody but many disagree.

Rumors about that APG have "sniffed" packets at the party are also floating around. But if this is true APG have a big problem. Because APG is a private organizaton and are not allowed to do this.

Furthermore some professors in IT and law says that participants not willingly should sign the document because it is not clear yet if the evidence gatheres could stand in a court og law.

At the moment the case is still developing, but it is very confusing. We are trying to keep up with all the info but it is hard. But now we have become a little more opimistic because we have heard that even with the current situation some organizers will arrange parties in the nearest future. And with the problem about the evidence, we can see a little light.... If APG do not win this case I'm sure that lanparties will continue here in denmark...
