Lo all,

As I've recently just fitted a Radeon 9700 Pro Im wondering what I could do to improve my 3D Mark score etc, i.e. what else will I have to buy hehe.

My 3D Mark score is about 10,800 to 11,000'ish and my Q3 fps at 1024 X 768 X 32 is a 'lowly' 150/160 fps. Now this might seem OK but I was getting this kind of fps with my Gforce 3 golden sample (timedemo 4 and 1.32 no vsync or AA etc, All Catalyst options set to performance, latest drivers etc.)

Now I've seen reviews on the Radeon with similar kit to mine getting well over 200 fps and even 300 fps at 800 X 600. I know this is all academic but I'm just so far off these sort of fps that its making me wonder if Ive missed something. I deleted my Q3 config and let Quake build a new one which I then tweaked as usual but its made very little diff.

The last time I had such a big drop in performance with Q3 was due to using a SB Extigy USB soundcard I had borrowed, silly me :)

My sys consists of:

Athlon XP 2000+ (1885) running 42C Load
Abit KG7 (non raid)
512Mb PC2700 OCZ CL2 @ 145Mhz
ATI Radeon 9700 Pro 128Mb
1 x 40Gb Western Digital 5400rpm
1 x 20Gb Western Digital 5400rpm
Plexwriter 24x10x40
Matrix Orbital BLC 2021-GW
Sparkle 400 Watt psu

Obviously the cpu is a big bottle neck especially with the Radeon, but are my 'old' HD's or Mobo killing my scores, and would the addition of the Matrix Orbital affect anything fps wise? This also doesnt explain why Ive had such a drop in performance with Q3 since fitting the Radeon :/

Well thanks for the input :) After reading nearly every thread in every forum I decided to reinstalled the NT version of DX8. Im using W2K which I forgot to mention and I never even knew there was an NT version of DX8. This resulted straight away in a 3D Mark figure of 12150 which I think is about right. My Q3 fps is still lame so this hasnt solved everything.

I think i'm right in saying that Quake uses OpenGL not D3D...so DirectX wont effect your results....have you played with OpenGL setting in ATI control applet?

Maybe worth a try

Thanks m8, yeah I know quake uses openGL and I have played about with the settings i.e. turning everything to performance etc, but I still feel Im missing something major.
