I've been contemplating either and ipod or iriver. decided in the end to get an ipod although not bought it yet as i am waiting till i get paid on the 19th.
Heres what i have learnt so far...
Iriver:
20gb Drive - around £250
LCD Remote Control
Max of 5,000 Songs (Even if you have free space left wont let you go over 5000 songs).
Only really USB2.
Doesnt work on Mac
Replacement battery is £40 have to send unit to manufacturer
Has FM tuner
Ipod
-Mac and PC.
-Firewire and USB2 (i dont have usb 2 on my pc so good for me)
-Replacement battery is $49 can do it yourself...or $69 and private company does it
for 20gig drive its £250 or £244 at amazon www.advancedmp3players.com , as for the battery, as far as ive gathered its a lithium polymer battery? which supposedly lasts longer and it is true you get more battery life from it in general but im not sure about its life. Thing is apple batterys run out and they will set you back £50-60 or apple do the fitting service for £80 from what ive gathered. Id rather see you buy an Iriver just so you can write a review on it in all its glory and lemme buy one in confidence :) gwan you know you want it

on average how long do the batteries last ? i think thats a rip there not rechargeable
I have an I-River IFP 195TC, its a portable 512MB unit. I am gonna get a IHP 120 when I can afford it.
I-RIVER OVER AN I-POD ANYDAY, I HAVE READ PLENTY OF REVIEWS AND THE I-RIVER IS PACKED WITH LOADS OF USEFUL FEATURES. SOUND QUALITY IS BETTER ALSO, WHICH IS THE MOST IMPORTANT THING I GUESS.

Thank you for shouting that i just about heard you...
The sound quality is only as good as the songs that you play on it. I dont know if the Iriver supports DRM...main reason i got the ipod is becuase that when i tunes gets here it will play protected AAC files.
Sorry for shouting, I just feel strongly about this!lol! I-Rivers dont support drm:(

i dunno im still edging towards Ipod mini
looks cool, nice size, funky, and well.... just cant not want one
wouldnt go with a mini, if i get an ipod i will go all the way and get a 60giger, will last much longer and is a better investment IMO

Well 60GB of MP3's translates to about a month of music (at 192kbit).
If you want a change you can just dock it and change the music. Unless you plan to be from your computer for about a month at a time.
my taste in music changes very fast, somtimes im in the mood for jazz other times heavy metal, then another time hip hop. it would be nice to have all the genres on the ipod so that i can change tastes at will

The iRiver IHP-120/140 are wonderful units. They surpass the iPod in every way except perhaps for the style an fact they are't an iPod. they have longer battery life, LCD remote, FM radio, line-in and FM recording. They come with a rnage of accessories, they are cheaper. I can list so many raesons why they beat an iPod and the only reason I could list for the iPod is it is the gadget people want to have atm. BTW the 40Gig model is 275 atm at advancedmp3players.co.uk
Didnt happen to copy that sig from somewhere did you   :p
Well with iTunes 4.5 they have released a new "lossless" compression which should give CD quality at half the size of the previous CD quality mp3 and other formats. That means even more space. Gonna take me a while to fill my 40Gb iPod even with using 192kb sampling rate.
