once you start modding, your insurance will go up cos they will consider you to be a wayne or barry.

even the cheapest car will cost you stupid money once you put silly bits of plastic all over it.

and then when you hit the mother and child at the bus stop because of your inexperience they wont pay out cos of the un-notified mods...

then you get 8 points for no insurance.. oh and cos you are a new driver, a compulsory retest, and even sillier insurance.

go ahead, do it, but i hope someone shops you....

when you get as old as me, you will realise just how stupid driving a modded car uninsured is.

I modded cars in my youth, but always told the insurance co... they didn't load the premium too much. it went up from 300 quid tpft to 450 on my cortina. my bikes were/are modded... again, all notified to the insurance co....

there are some things that you just dont do... and no insurance is one of them....

Idiots not having insurance make the premiums for those with insurance higher.

It is for that reason I propose that anyone being caught not having car insurance (or bike insurance) (or a few other crimes) should be hung, drawn and thirded (quartered is out of date imo)

an then have to face the family of the victim of an uninsured driver....

i would kill anyone who hurt any of my family, regardless of the consequences. Slowly, so they could feel the pain i would be feeling.

I'm sorry, but that is what being a family man does to a bloke....

No u have missed my point.

I will be insured , but things like the car being lowered more than 40 mm wont. Most ppl i no do it , put thing like hugh alloys on , amazing sound systems etc and there not insured for them but there still insured for the bog standard (plus some things) car !

All it means is , if i crash the car i only get the money for the car and all the extra stuff i get nothing for :(

NO you have missed the point.... the insurance company can quite legitamately turn round and withdraw the cover totally (and they do) if you make the slightest deviation from factory condition. And they do it a lot these days....

you dont just get the standard value of the car these days because the insurance company look for any get out they can not to pay to keep the profits up.

As slamdog says.. you make 1 little change to your car, even putting alloy wheels on it will invalidate you policy as this is still treated as a mod. Ive heard all to oftain insurers taking nothing do do with policys where the cars been modded and involved in an accident.

You want a cheap car (insurance) go for any car 1.2 or less, this gives you cheap car tax too. stick to a car thats under a £1000 in value, have it alarmed and parked off the street. these are the main things you can do to reduce your " quote ".

remember no boy racer blacked out windows, 18" 5 spoke alloys, wide exhaust, Silver petrol cap, dodgy paint job..as these are treated as mods and as it will appeal to the car thiefs your premium will be sky high.

Insurers always looking to get out of it.....

The second your car deviates from what the insurance company think its is (even if it's only alloys or a bodykit), they are able to withdraw cover because it is not the same car they insured you on. So if you have any kind of claim at all you'll get nothing. If you want to do anything like that then you have to tell the insurance company before you do it, normally they will do one of three things:

1. Tell you if you do it they will withdraw cover totally
2. Increase your premium
3. Record the change but keep the premium the same

Number 3 has never happend in my experience, and with the sort of mods you're considering you're more likely to get cover withdrawn. Your best bet is to get something cheap and easy to insure and then get some no claims bonus saved up and then get what it is you want. You're better off in the long run since if you have an accident while technically uninsured then you're likely to lose your licence (especially if it's more serious).

Whilst I sympathise with you a bit, the rest of the lads are spot on regarding insurance on modded cars.

20 Years ago, when I modded my car, I would change the alloys to bigger alloys and didn't bother telling the insurance company. THEN, it didn't matter provided I hadn't modified the performance.
NOW, as the guys say, ANY excuse will do for them to dis-honour a claim.
I don't think that changing the petrol cap for a shiny one or upgrading headlights will invalidate insurance but anything that changes the outward appearance physically, certainly will.

Small engined but smart small cars are the best way to go for semi decent insurance and building up a no-claims is the best way to go.

I was waiting long and hard till I was 25yrs old to enjoy cheaper car insurance....that year my insurance went up and was told the young driver thresh-hold was now 30.

Now ive reached that age..lets see if my insurance will drop any....I doubt it tho.:(

or you could come clean and tell the insurance all your mods and pay the price.

by all means get a car, but it isnt a cheap game. Remember, you have control of a quarter ton+ of metal and it is very easy for it to become a lethal weapon.

i cant see the attraction of bodykits anyway, most look pants unless you spend vast sums to have them fitted properly and painted to match. Spoilers (especially those silly ones on long stalks) will make no difference to any car you could afford to buy or insure so dont waste your cash on that!

the only car i had with a bodykit was my bmw 525 se, and that was a factory fitted kit. pain in the ar$e thing used to catch on low kerbs when nose in parking, and speed humps as well. I ended up getting an angle grinder and taking an inch off the front spoiler.....
