Hi,

I know this aint a benchmark Q really but i want some advice. My motherboard only goes upto a 333FSB and the last AMD chip i can get for it is a AMD 3000 with 333FSB. I'm currently on an AMD 1700....is it worth the £99? ie will there be a performance increase etc.

Well assuming your running your XP1700 @ stock speeds then you would see quite a big performance hike. Your CPU is running at 1463Mhz on a 266(133) fsb, the XP3000 runs around 2200Mhz (not sure exactly) on a 333(166)fsb. Your gfx card is a good one and won't hold you back so you should see a nice difference in performance for things that need it (ie, Excel won't run any faster but need for speed will).

But then again... if it's a decent 1700+ (i.e. a JIUCB Thoroughbred), you can get some mighty decent speeds outta it already, and save yerself a packet in the process :D

To confirm you'll need to take the cooler off and look at the codes on the back of the CPU. If you post them up here we can tell you. If you want to check yourself just google about there are plenty of sites that will give you the best stepping for overclocking. But it will also depend on the mobo you're using and the memory, and maybe the quality of the PSU. My first post was based on running at stock speeds but Creepy's right, you could save a lot of money. I have a 1700 that will do 2200 and currently running my 2100 at 2300 so not planning to upgrade at all.

if you're only running at 1.4 ghz then you need to up your fsb on your mobo as the 3200 should run at 2.2 ghz. my 2500 ran at 1 ghz when i put it in but i soon figured out that it had reset the default values on me mobo!

upon researching your soltek board. its Via KT333 chipset aint it. Which means that it would only take a 266fsb CPU. The 333 stands for PC2700 memory. Not sure but I think thats what it is. Also upon lookin at ur sig it seems u got an abit board so maybe u encountered this problem already. On another note though if the 1700+ is a good overclocked probably would be worthwhile getting an nforce2 board and a substantial hsf :D
