Ive got an 7" touchscreen model of the lilliput, off the same guy infact.
Remember to take into consideration P&P and import duties.

You can buy the 7" or 8" versions here (http://www.allcam.biz/products/lcd_touch_screen.html)

...don't have to worry about import duty then.....

Why must you all tempt me with these shiny things? (Looks for new credit card application form).

The 7" touchscreen looks amazing. I'd love to implant it into the wall in my hallway to act as the control panel for my house. (Quite a few things in my house are controlled by a PC).

Is import duty just VAT @ 17.5%? It will still work out cheaper to buy from this ebay guy. Someone in another forum has bought from him and was really pleased but it took a couple of weeks for it to arrive.

There's a forum I got directed to before, and it had loads of members who had bought one of these, and the majority of them complained that the touch screen didn't work. On some models, you need to open the screen up and reattach one or two wires.

ProPlus, can you remember what the forum was called or even the URL of the thread please? It would be useful to have it posted here in case any one of us buys a screen and finds out they have the problem you mentioned. Thanks!

Thanks ProPlus.

I've worked out that if we buy the 7" VGA touchscreen from ebay (Hong Kong) it will come to £223 including postage and import duty. I've never been charged import duty from purchases from CDWOW (also in HK) but maybe customs only bother with more expensive items?

I've found another source, this time based in Germany. CarTFT.com is selling the same product for £230 including postage and vat. At least they claim it includes vat. I'm not sure what the EU trade laws are these days but I will email carTFT to double check VAT inclusion.

It may cost £7 extra in total but if something goes wrong it's cheaper and faster to send it back to Germany. There seems to be a small chance that something will according to the forum that ProPlus mentioned.

in my experience, customs will let through a one off expensive item but will add your details to a database, so if any further items come acorss it's pulled to one side and is looked at for import duty.
i don't know what the trigger level is but i'm sure it's less than the £223 your talking about.

I paid duty on a graphics card worth $70. The reason was my delivery address was my place of work, and customs worked on that basis rather than my name. The bill came via the finance dept of my (very large) company which was a touch disconcerting. Though it was due to the couriers mis labeling my order based on the presumption of business use, I paid up because the card could not be had in the UK cheaper even with duty included...

Regarding VAT, if you pay at source in the EU (Germany) you should not have to pay again here. In theory...

I bet your boss thought you were being a cheeky monkey when that VAT invoice turned up! ;)

CarTFT.com replied within minutes, no kidding! Very impressed. They said the same as you - we don't have to pay VAT again in the UK if it has been paid in Europe. They also send a VAT invoice. Hmm, I wonder if I can still claim the VAT back as I'm VAT registered?

Gary.

Not too sure about that - I think it's more to do with the luck of the draw. Sometimes you win, sometimes you don't. Perhaps more to do with the shipping company the vendor uses. If it's shipped via a big company such as DHL or UPS, you'll find that they calculate the import duty (and handling fee) as opposed to customs and excise.
