I've been looking at shuttles for a while now, and was wondering why people use them? What would you say are the main advantages/disadvantages betweens shuttles and tower systems?

I know they look cool, and they are nice and small. But what else?

Convince me people!

So,apart from the fact that they perform equally as well as a tower system, you have answered your own question.:)

What would you recommend a starter in the field to go for?

If your flavour is for AMD (I have both sorts but on cost of build go for AMD every time) then the most over or under clockable (!) is the SN45G....they are getting very cheap now.
With that option you would have to put your own choice of graphics card in cos there is no onboard graphics.....as most people want good gaming capability onboard doesn't cut it anyway.
That and a 'clockable 2500 XP ( just in case you want to go that way) and you are on your way to a really fine little performer.
An SN45G and a 2500xp would set you back about £200.....there after its down to how highly you specify the rest of the rig......you need to factor in memory ( again cheaper than its ever been at the moment) hard drive ( again cheaper than.......etc etc ) and graphics card.......personally I would hunt down a second hand Ti 4200......they will handle anything you throw at them and concidering that they can be had for £50 are a steal.
All in all......£350 should see you with a little rocketship of a rig.

Thanks for the replies. What are they like for noise levels? I am now thinking of keeping my tower upstairs, and maybe sticking a shuttle in my living room and plugging it into the TV.

Well they're not as quiet as people make out so a change of fan is in order but other than that they are awesome bits of kit.:D
