My big rant on MSI:
Firstly I was stupid enough to buy the wonderfully crappy MSI Mega PC. If anyone is thinking of doing the same, don't. It's dreadful. Dreadfully slow, dreadfully loud after about 2 weeks of usage. Oh, and it doesn't work as advertised. Here's my big list of Boohoo's about the MSI M.E.G.A PC:
1) The LCD Screen. Wow, in all those pictures MSI show, this thing sure looks cool. Nice orange-on-black scheme. Looks nice. It isn't. The actual thing has black-on-orange and it looks DREADFUL. It looks so cheap and tacky it is unbelievable.
2) The radio. Admittedly I'm in a dip where I live and have trouble getting radio signals but even so, I don't have any problems getting SOME signal. The MEGA PC was able to pick up only static rumblings which I could, with some imagination, just make out to be Moylesy. When connected to the house Antenna where I have no problems getting radio signal, the MEGA didn't work at all.
3) It blew my ****ing CD Drive up. On the box there is a little warning along the lines of 'due to the design of the Mega PC MSI cannot assure compatability with non-MSI optical drives'. In real life this actually means 'If your cd drive wasnt made by us, we'll blow it up.' And they did, they really did. The night that I got the computer I put my faithful CD-RW into the machine. Lovely CD-RW which had been serving me flawlessly for 2 months. The night I got it the MEGA PC spun up so fast it ****tered the CD in the drive. Needless to say the lense was badly scratched and the drive rendered useless, and now I can't play the Allied campaign on Red Alert 2.
4) Noise. Admittedly, when I first got the system it was quiet. Barely noticeable compared to a full-size rig. But then after a month things started getting a little hairy... And loud. Needless to say that i don't exactly have my speakers on loud but I couldn't hear them over the noise of the MEGA PC anyway. It came from being near silent, to being louder than my speakers. You could hear it from halfway across the house.
5) Heat. I had a 2.4ghz P4 and a 9600pro in the unit, certainly not the maximum that the unit can officially take. Sometimes I leave my computer number-crunching for about 20 minutes at a time. The computer wouldn't last this long before overheating and shutting down. One time I took the unit to a friends house for a LANing session. I set it up on his window-sill under sunlight. Now, normal systems will run hot. They will get very hot but they should not overheat, not even in direct-sunlight. The Mega PC would not even boot into windows without overheating. I hate to think what the unit would be like with a 3ghz processor in it.
6) MSI Tech Support. Is non-existant. After about 2 months of usage, the CPU cooler clip on the motherboard snapped. Now, this is a tiny little clip which screws onto the motherboard. It screws on and is therefore replacable. It is a tiny little plastic clip, and is therefor not expensive. Anyway, I got onto e-mail to MSI. And phoned them. And e-mailed them. And phoned them. And so-on-and-so-forth. After about 4-5 months of this, I finally got the canned response 'Return the item to your dealer for replacement'. For.****s.Sake. All they have to do is send out a <10p clip but Noooooo. I have to have the whole ****ing system replaced. So, I took the system back to where I bought it from (at an extortianately high price I might add, compared to other SFFs out there). They now have to send the whole unit back to MSI for repairs. To screw in a little <10p clip. Minimum repair time of 2 months. 2 months to screw in a little <10p clip. FOR ****S SAKE PEOPLE GET YOUR ****ING ACT TOGETHER. Needless to say that in the 4 months of waiting for MSI to reply to their e-mail I had made a little clip myself, but I wanted the offical clips for when I tried to sell the bag of ****e unit.
Anyhow, another seperate thing is how much they care for their customers. The OFFICIAL forums are full of people asking for help with the unit, describing problems that they've had. The moderators and official representatives are non-existant. I posted at least 20 messages each with negative comments about the Mega pc, on the OFFICIAL FORUMS, and none of them were moderated, I got no warnings and no messages whatsoever about it.
Conclusion
After 6 months of using this unit, I have come to the conclusion that IT IS A BAG OF ****E. To expand upon this I believe that it is overpriced, tacky and is falsely advertised in relation to the LCD screen. I might go see a lawyer and find out what the prospects of sueing for false advertising regarding this are. Thank you for listening.
