VCR is down again

My main VCR has jacked its hand in yet again. So it is time to consider the options. HTPC sounds OK, but boot times concern me. The Panasonic DVD- ram recorders with HDs look intersting too, and obviously would not take as long as windows to get on StBy. Anyone know of any good sites where good info is available about HTPCs and HD recorders etc?, etc.

Why not just leave it on :) ?

Edit: Ok, i'll stop being silly now. Look for a cut down version of Linux. Some of the uni compters here are running linux and can boot in under 10 seconds to a perfectly usable machine.
