View Full Version : Which hard drive?
I'm kind of torn between Maxtor Diamond Max and Western Digital Caviar.
Which is the more reliable and which runs cooler?

i would tend to favour western digital. i think they are slightly faster than the maxtors.
mind you, a lot of people have something against maxtor. they are equally good drives from my experience.
have you not considered the new near silent range of samsung drives
i'm looking at getting a new hard drive and at the moment i would be going with the sansung models.
i love maxtor myself. i dont see think there very loud at all and im very happy with there stability.

well ive just ordered the WD 200GB Caviar and have heard its a lot better than the Maxtor version
i've got a Maxtor 40GB one at the moment and have had for over 2 years now and havent had any problems
I think you'll find there won't be much difference in the heat produced by either the Maxtor or WD drives.
It's possible though, that the WD (and this feels right to say) would run a bit hotter. Though, correct me if I'm horribly wrong!
I think the new Samsung drives (the Uber-Quiet ones) would be fairly cool in operation.
Any benchies from those HD's ? :D
I've got a Seagate Barracuda SATA 120G 7002.7, it runs perfectly and its quiet too!
Try HDTach for benching the HD.
Or SiSoft Sandra on the File System Benchmark

I find these general comparisons:
Seagate: Silent, but not as fast
Maxtor: Very quiet, yet pretty fast
WD: Bullet speed, but not so quiet
IBM: Fast but very noisy
Sammy: silent, don't know about speed tho.

Hhhhm,
In generally they are ALL fast... ,about how loud or not it always depends from the user who listen to them.
Even my Seagate get a ~35000 mb/s SiSoftSandra HD score... the Maxtors can go up to 36-8...
But the thing on these hard drives is that you'll never see any difference in real life ;) (and I'm not talking about SCSI drives or SATA Raptors operating at 10000rpm's :))
