View Full Version : Rugby World Cup Final
Australia 17-20 England what a game.
England champs - what did u scots think of that?
Best game of the world cup for sheer drama alone ! I have no nails left at all!
YEY that will show the Ozzys who is BoSS!
A great game and after hearing my dad swearing downstairs, I think he would agree :) .
I got wakened up to hear my flat mates shouting at the tv, for some reason for a bunch of scottish people they were rather into it.
And dont bother trying to start trying to bait the scots etc. I personally dont give a flying monkey who won... as long as it wasn't the french :)
I am pleased for England's success but the thing that truly ****es most Scots off is the gloating we will get from your commentators for the next twenty years!!
We have had it for 37 years over 1966, it still gets referred to, every time there is an international tournament.
So cheer and congratulate yourselves all you want today, tomorrow, next week, - you've earned it - but try to tone it down in the coming twenty years!!

that is only because we win at **** all else. :)
Alan but think what would happen if it was scotland won , we would never hear the end of it either :D And quite rightly as it would be a massive thing for any of the home nations to win a world cup :)
We have the bragging rights, dont ask us to turn it down! Muhahahaha:D
Ah but Gordy, that's the difference, say Scotland won the World Cup at football or rugby then picture the scene 10 years later, 15 years later, and Scotland are playing a match in a new competition. Scottish commentators are commentating 'cos its a Scotland only broadcast - which is fairly normal 'cos England may be playing and they'll be seeing their own match. In this case, if Scottish commentators hark back to the old Scottish World Cup victory, it is to a domestic (i.e Scottish) audience.
If it was a national broadcast, say Scotland were the only British team in the World Cup, what usually happens is that viewers in Scotland get Scottish commentators and English commentators comment for the rest of Britain. In this case also, the Scottish commentators may hark back to the great Scottish victory but the English commentators would not. Again it is for home consumption - which is fine.
In other words, frequent references to past glories are not shoved down other peoples throats (in the imaginery example above, English people are the other people) year after year after year.
Sadly because England is the larger part of the Union, commentators often forget (especially south east commentators) that there are other parts to the country and behave as if their audience is strictly English so when its a national broadcast, as they usually are, non domestic people can get cheesed off with it. This is not just a Scots thing, its a trait you would fine all over the world.
About three years ago, I was staying in an Hotel in Sale and who walks into the bar, but John Mottson - this was his local hotel when commentating at Old Trafford which he was due to do the next night. Anyway, I got into some conversation with him and another guy who had been talking to him and put this point to him ('cos he is one of the top "offenders") and his answer was simple - "we forget" - my audience is largely English, as interested in the right result as I am - so you tend to let Englishness slip out. He also understood, give him his due, that it could be very annoying.
He laughed when I told him that there was usually a "Book" opened (in Scotland) at international tournaments to see how soon into the opening match (not usually involving England ) 1966 would be mentioned. No bets are ever placed on the second half and at one tournament, the bookies made a bomb 'cos it got mentioned just before the kick-off!
I have to say I thought mentioning the 1966 world cup had no relivance to the rugby so i agree that it shouldnt have been made so important. That said Clive woodward said he was taking inspiration from it and the Cohen connection made it slightly relevant (Cohen's uncle was in the 1966 team and was there today to see his nephew repeat his feat. Unfortunatly cohens father was murder a few years back so was not there :( )
I can understand the frustration of the celtic nations having to put up with english commentators though in most cases there is a representative of the specific country on the commentary team and they are just as guilty .

Even the commentators couldn't be completely non biased. Its the greatest sporting event of the decade so far and the last decade as well come to think of it.
There were a few little let downs here and there. Wilkinson had a cracking game making the tackles count playing the sort of games I'm more used to seeing back at his home club of Newcastle. His boot wasn't as accurate today with some rather difficult kicks but with fantastic support with forward breaks from Dawson and Johnson, the drop goal was set up beautifully, for once it wasn't England 'who were robbed'.
Everyone played very well, finding their man in the most part when passing and did you see how many opposition line out balls Johno took successfully? Well read.
My other notables include Greenwood who only made the one big handling error and Cohen who must be in one of the top sporting familys :). I can't forget Robinson, the conditions were far from perfect for him but he was still able to run and score an amazing try from a beautiful pass from Wilko.
For once the Aussies were silenced, it will be interesting to see what their press says tommorow about the whole thing.
It was not only just a great day for England, it was a great day for the Northern Hemisphere who have taken the cup for the first time. Tony Blair even recieved a letter of congratualtions from the French President.
I think the Ben Cohen story with his uncle in the winning football squad is a very nice story. That must be some good feeling in that family:D
I just posted here to change my post count - it was 1966 - shiver, shiver :p :p
