He he, nice little surprise for me at work today. A nice lady brought me a brand new Sony Ericsson P900. Not had much chance to play with it yet (still charging), but it looks damn nice and appears to have some darn fine features :D

Cheers,
Stephen

I'm a dyed-in-the-wool Nokia fan, and this is the first non-Nokia phone I have really used in over 4 years, but I'm suprised to say I do like it. It's more of a PDA than a phone, so many things require a stylus to operate, but there are some really neat features. There is a proper web browser for starters, an email client that can be configured to check for mail periodically (obviously incurring costs for GPRS usage) and the support for sound and video formats is pretty good.

There are a few niggles, but mainly these are down to my having to get used to a new UI, but I'm slowly getting there. It's also a bit of a pain converting all my contacts, as I went from Nokia to Lotus Notes to Ericsson, and some of my contact details are missing, so I'll need to work on a better way of transferring all my numbers over. That said, the integration into Lotus Notes and Outlook appears very good, and the proper handwriting recognition is pretty good too. At this rate, my Tungsten T's days may be numbered ;)

I guess you can tell by now that I would recommend it. Dunno if I would pay the going rate for one, but I guess working for a Telco has its advantages :D

Cheers,
Stephen

It uses Lotus Scrotes? Uhg! Mind you thats no better than Outlook :(

I'll stick to my Nokia ta, it makes phonecalls - that'll do me.

Nope, the P900 doesn't use Notes, my company does (for the time being - we're changing to Outlook). However, you have the option to sync your to do lists, contacts, emails, etc with either Lotus Notes or Outlook.

Stephen

Ah nice, I know who you work for but I never knew they ran scrotes internally.

Enjoy your new phone! I've been a customer of your company for 5 years and all I ever get is a groan when I want a new handset - can you not just drop a P900 up to me sometime? :p

Contrary to popular belief, us employees don't get much. Often, you get a better deal for a new phone walking into Carphone Warehouse or the like, than we do with staff discount. The employee tariff is excellent (if I told you what I paid per minute you would cry), but for friends and family there is no point in buying a phone through my employer.

Other than that, we don't get much really. If we want a new phone, we normally have to buy it ourselves, unless it is paid for by a project which must supply us with the tools to test and support a new service (as in this case). The rest of the time it is a case of tough luck :(

Stephen

This uses the same OS as the 7650 doesn't it?

Yes, both use Symbian 7, although the look and feel of both is not that similar - the Nokia version has more bugs ;)

Stephen

Scratch that, the SPV E100 doesn't have a built in camera which is always fun on nights out (helps me reconstruct just what the hell I was up to... and with whom...). Can you post any pics of the p900?

Erm, no ;)
Firstly because I am using it to reply and secondly because I am in Glasgow and have no way of taking and uploading pictures.

Sony Ericsson's website has plenty of pics. If you can wait a week till I am back in BristoI I can do it then.

cheers,
Stephen.

Think I'll have to go for a 7650 for the moment :(

The 7650 is fantastic, I just would like the ability to transfer a decent album worth of music on to it which you can't.

You may want to wait as the 7650 is being superceded by the 6600. On paper it should be a good phone - the pre-release version I used was a bit buggy though.

Stephen

Just upgraded from my 7650 to a Samsung E700. I love it :)

I loved my 7650 and I couldn't part with it for a measly £20 trade in fee. So I've kept it in the vain hope that I can get it unlocked somehow and stick a pay as you go sim in it or something.

Pah! I know your tariff Jez :P. Orange 'staff' tariff with Line2, one line for Orange related stuff which is 0p a min and one for personal stuff which is 1p a min for all calls and sms are 0p :P. Don't think we'd get that on the high street :o.

Close, but not quite. You only get free SMS if Orange pay for the line 1 calls. And the employee tariff is not part of the staff discount scheme, which is for friends and family of employees. This is the one where I said staff do not get as good a deal as going into a shop.

It can be funny when somebody cold-calls me and offers to price match if I switch to a new contract though ;)

Stephen
