View Full Version : Win XP Activation!!!
Pretty much as in title.
It is THE worst thing M$ has done, its just so damn annoying, especially if youve got a comp that you have to re-install every so often!!

I also have no problems with activation, even when you phone up you give no details of yourself and it takes about 5-10 minutes to do. Sometimes you don't even need to speak to a human as the computer handles it all.

So they will activate it if you just explain some crap story about how you changed your computer or something ?

They just ask for the number your PC generates and then read off a number for you to activate the machine.
I had to give a little explanation once though I gave it as a part of the conversation -after all, you only have to speak to a human when the automatic system rejects you. In my case I had changed the motherboard which also meant the CPU, RAM and video card. Three weeks later, the hard drive packed in and that's when I had to phone.
In the early days particularly, it WAS a pain 'cos you had to phone a number within certain hours, you had to be logged onto the internet and most of us have only one 'phone line. If you used a mobile phone, the number wasn't free and if you tried it off line it was only when you phoned that you found you had to quote the 32 digit number 'cos the instructions weren'r clear - so it can be a pain but the last two times it has gone smoothly enough for me.

should be fun when i try to activate it again within the next 25 days!
Yeah.. See, now thats naughty.
I think it is good that Microsoft is trying to clamp down on Warez and multiple copies. If you dont feel that Windows xp is worth it then dont use it.

So what? It's the programmers that deserve the money. Your cheating people (perhaps like yourself) who are just earning a living out of money.
Its because people pirate the software and use it on more than one pc that the prices are so high.
But then we can all claim that people wont pirate the software if the software was cheap and didnt need activating, its all a vicious circle.
You can get student versions of software which are cheaper.
:)
If you dont like paying money move onto mandrake or similar. :p

i suppose now xp is owrth buying
it actually runs stable now
but back when it first came out, i found i never actialy needed to activate it
the instaled became too unstable and needed a format/reinstall at least once every 30 days
it was also ncie of MS to give me a free copy of XP
saved my precious pennies for alcohol :)

microsoft decided to give students studying an IT related degree free copies of some of their software
including
XP, visio, 2k, 2k pro, 2k server, 2k adv server, exchange server and VB.net
it is/was an attempt to try get more people learning to program using the .NET stuff

I dont use pirate software, i get things completely kosher (helps working around loads of copies of unwanted software)
As for Mandrake, i think my next project will be a linuxbox, ive got a copy of RedHat, hell, i may even invest in an SFF to become it!

I think you're bending the term slightly  - The fact that you're using one copy on 2 computers is NOT kosher in any way shape or form dude
My pet hate is Activations.
winXP
Windvd
All Arrowkey proggies - CDR diagnostic etc
DVD X Copy -backups only 123 studios
PDF Converter -Scansoft
super speed
those are some of the proggies I have that use it.
what gets me is,
It is not stated on any blurb untill you have paid for it.
If the peeps who program it / sell it go out of business then you have a useless program that can't be activated, that has happened to me.
Scansoft & 123 studios only allow 3 activations then you have to email them.
Super speed gives you NO re-activations. You must email them that you want to re-activate.
They send am email informing you that you must fill in a mini statement as to why you want to re-install.
If they are satisfied with your answer they will send an email asking for the system code the program generated when you re-installed it. then they will send an activation code.
Just think, you paid for the blasted programs so why go through all that hassle.
When you buy a car e.g., you don't phone ford or Vauxhall asking them if you can go out in your car.

Yep. Look at your machines spec. How many of those parts cost you over £90. I'm guessing most of them. Why do people spend £300-400 on a graphics card and then moan when they have to buy windows. Its a part for your PC like the processor.
If you installed it and then ghosted the info then if you had to reinstall you wouldnt have to re acivate all the time.

I'd like to see you try and download a fiesta off the internet. I dont think ford has a problem with warez'd fiestas.
i dont know what xp activation is and ive had xp pro since it came out ?
So will some one explain to me what it is ? :)

come on Frothy! we know you wanna :D:D
lol!!!
Activation.
you install the program, enter the product key.
Set up the program to your liking.
You have so many days to either go online or phone microsoft to activate or it will not run.
what happens is, if you do it online, MS asks your 'puter for a number, it's downloaded, MS checks to see if it has been used by someone else, if not, MS sends a 50 ( I think it's 50) digit numer to your 'puter and you are activated.
On the phone you give the number, then if it's OK, you are given a 50 digit nimer and you have to be quick to enter it.
If the number has been used, you are refused activation and will incur the wrath of MS, 'cos MS will think you copied / pirated it.
If you get activated OK, and you carry out hardware changes, when a limit is reached you have to activate again.
When the number of times you activate has reached a limit set by MS (5 I think) you will invited to phone MS and explain why you need to activate again.
MS isn't the only software company donig it now. It's a real pain in the - you know where.
We base our software activation keys on W2K domain names (its all business stuff).
If you have a single license key for "DOMAINA" and you install the software in "DomainB" it wont work. Also, if you have one license in DOMAINA and you try and install a second copy anywhere in that domain with the same key, they both stop.
Makes support interesting.
i think there needs to be some compramise really , its stupid to have to pay 90 - 100 quid per pc you have in your house for a brand new os on each one , they should just say its ok to use the same os on all pcs as long as there under the same roof (and i dont just mean at the time of the installation :D) like you do with your tv licence . as for the activation its very very annoying to have to waste my money to activate it via phone but i understand why its done and it is good ms are taking piracy a little serious
so if you have no internet where do you download the crack?
If people didnt steal software in the first place it wouldnt be a problem.

I would get it from college where I am now. The point is, you need to activate a product on the machine it's installed on.

Hmm...
we ALL on here have a Legit copy of Microsoft Windows....
...
...
...
...
... just don't ask us where we got it :P lol!!!!!
I only have legit copies now, all the slightly dubious ones went years ago when I found Linux.
Nick
I have all my copies of ms software legit, but seeing as i am an authorised reseller of it i get a special deal...
You need legit copies in order to download Service patches and updates. Maybe thats why microsoft have so many security holes in their software...?
You need legit copies in order to download Service patches and updates.
Really? heh.. whatever gave you that idea? There are many, many people who would disagree with you on that.
You need an official copy of windows 2003 for it to dl patches etc, this is the only OS that wont work properly on a cracked version.
The original cracked versions of this OS no longer work properly.
Well XP is the same.
I downloaded XP SP1 for someone, when i installed it i has a message saying his serial no was invalid. Turns out SP installers look for valid keys before continuing.
Of course, you can get a cracked SP installer or key changer. But you have to wait for someone to release one.
cant see the point on spending £1000 + on a system then trying to avoid £80 for an OS.
Right, I've deleted all the shi*e about cracked copies and whatever else and I don't expect to see it re-appear. If you want to use windows pay the fee like the rest of us. If you don't, use linux.
End of.
